I am reading this book called "fitness unleashed" by Marty Becker DVM and Robert Kushner MD. The title kind of gives away the idea, and i thought it would be a no-duh book about loosing weight by eating less and moving more... well it is but it also talks about dog calorie intake and healthy treats and activity levels. If anyone is wondering about the health of their dog, or you just want something interesting to look at, check out this book.

It is also nice, if you are like me and are pleasantly plump. *blush* I used to take my dogs to the dog park all the time and I realised that one of my dogs really did not move to much. She would sit and sniff and hang out. She also started gaining weight. Now we go to the dogpark as a treat, but they have to walk a mile a day minimum. Miranda is loosing weight and she is more spunky. They also nap a lot more and I cannot complain about that.

So that is all I guess. Awesome book with detailed info about yout health and your pets. And some people wanna complain about the cost of the book, it is only 14.00$, a lot cheaper than a gym membership.

Sounds like something quite a few people from here could gain by reading!!!!
dog weight is extremely important especially with corgis. Overweight corgis are more likely to have back problems. I have to keep alex thin because of her hip dysplasia, so whenever we go somewhere, people tell me that she is SO thin compared to the other corgis they have seen. they tell me that when they see corgis, they usually look like stubby little sausages! Its hard for corgis to exercise for a long time because of their tiny little legs, they just get too tired. But stay with it! I have seen this... its a very good book.
my little girl is a fluff, so she has had people making comments about her weight her whole life. It was just the fur. It has only been the last 6 months that she has ever had a weight issue. And that is because she steals my puppies food. She would eat her food and his food. He is a healthy weight and she was round-ish. So now they are both on low calorie food and I give the younger dog more treats on the side to even it out. They also get carrots, bananas, and olive oil. Soon she will be off diet food and back on regular. It will cut down on her moody food behavior if they are eating the same thing again. The weight is down a lot, now we are working on muscle. LOL. like corgi push ups i guess.
Our dogs will walk 1.5-2 miles, and then chase/herd their soccer ball at the playground for more time than I can give them. They NEVER seem to get bored with this. Boundless enthusiasm, lots of running and acampering. Eventually, they'll get a bit winded and tired, but that would be after maybe 30 minutes or more. Maybe Gwynnie (7 y.o.) is slowing down a bit, but Al (3 y.o.) is just a rocket. I need to rent-a-kid to play with our dogs. I don't have time enough for this.
I think the deal is: we do what we're used to. If a dog is a couch potato, tearing around the neighborhood for an hour might seem like a big workout, but if they do that every day, it's nothing. Regular exercise cranks up your energy level and stamina.
It's amazing when I run into people at the pet store with my dogs and they make the comment, "ours don't look like that" I explain that these are exactly the weight they should be and they usually comment that their are "a little" overweight! My bet is most of them are the sausage style! Poor dogs!
Someone we know who has dogs commented that Jack looked a little thin. Welllll, I think their dogs look a little plump! :-)
Thanks I will look for that book. I always have people tell me my corgis seem smaller than others they have seen but i do notice that I have to watch Izzy's weight but not Sparty's. Sparty has always been high energy but Izzy is very mild mannered and likes to lay around. When Sparty was young and the weather was awful so no real long walks he would drop his ball down the stairs so he could chase it. Izzy will lay on the couch all day if I don't have something fun to do. Fortunately I love long walks especially in the woods and am very strict about food amounts so they stay very healthy. Since the dobe came to live with us I get complements on what great shape she is in too. I feel like it is really unkind to over feed my pets and I really want to be a good owner!
