What are some of your and your corgis favorite training treats? What gets them really going, and most importantly, isn't a pain to split up/cut for you? Also, how many treats do you normally use in a day for intense training?

I personally was using Zukes and Cloud Star for potty treats and occasionally luring treats, but Nellie lost interest in them fast. They were okay for no-distraction training, but being off-leash inside or even on-leash outside made her the snootiest of all snoots towards those treats. She however LOVED the Natural Balance food log our trainer uses and would ignore all the other pups in class for them, even when she was free to run around! I'm not a fan of the ingredients though (Wheat, Nitrates, etc) and will probably not use them when she transitions to a grain free kibble. I bought some Solid Gold Tiny Tots treats and beef liver which were also recommended by the trainer, but they were very pricy, and I'm not sure how Nellie will like them yet.

I always used cheese when I was obedience training.  Every dog I ever trained would do anything I asked if a piece of cheese was at the end of it.  I know that's not the thing that is popular to use today...they have special training treats and all that but that's what worked for me and my dogs.

Right.. some dogs get tummy issues with cheese. I know dogs love it though, so hopefully it can be one of Nellie's high value treats.

I use Nature's Recipe training treats with Foxy and she really likes them.  They are very soft so I can break them in half with my fingers and they are small to start with.  I don't know exactly how many we use, but she gets quite a few during training.  I did also just buy Pet Botanics mini training treats to try but have not yet  We are trying them at school tonight.

She did not like the Bil-Jac treats or the Science Diet training treats.  I have been trying different ones to give her a variety, but I think I am going to go back to the Nature's Recipe since I know it's a sure thing.  She's kind of picky.

Good luck to you.

Nellie is picky too! She love love loves the Natural Balance logs, but the ingredients are really not great. I would use human sausage but then I worry about the sodium. She's liking the Tiny Tots okay, probably a little better than the Zukes. I haven't tried cheese or chicken yet but will have to soon.

I agree with Linda...cheese is the greatest! I use string cheese and slice it in 4ths then cut into tiny bits. Cheap hot dogs work the same way. Leftover meat cut into bits work also. Bill Jacks broken also work and they are easy to break into smaller pieces.

Poor Nellie had a real problem with all the sodium in the hot dogs. I bought some specifically for training but they made her extra thirsty and I'm not entirely sure she was all that excited about them. I have some string cheese though, I'll be sure to try those :)

Kaylee will do most anything for cheese or deli meat. Usually once I get to using those, she won't do much for her normal training treats which are Real Meat treats (http://www.realmeatpet.com/). They come in easy to rip wafers. I'd say Kaylee considers them medium value. Good enough to on-leash in class or anytime at home. Not so good when other playful dogs are around.

Switching up the treat you use can help too. After a few weeks of use, I get another flavor to keep Kaylee interested.

Freeze dried chicken liver, and dried sheeps lung.  The lung bits are easy to break into smaller pieces. Bogart turned his nose up at most treats when we got him.  At classes at PetSmart he probably had a good handfull of treats each class, and when we train at home I usually give about 10-12 small bits in a session.  I keep the sessions kind of short.  I always give a treat for recall.

Becca loves dried lamb lung. The bags are expensive, but they last a long time, and no additives. String cheese is another favorite. I pull out bacon or hot dogs when I need total concentration or recall. I keep a bag of Charlie Bears on hand because they work well in a pocket without crumbling.

Hamburger meat... Judy's absolute favorite.  She'll do tricks for anything, but when I take out the ground beef, you just see the love and excitement in her eyes!
