Most of my Corgis are fine in at the vet with me in the room BUT today I took Wynn and Teddy in to have their nails clipped (I am sick of fighting with them). Well the vet asked if Wynn should go in without me and since he's such a little BIG mouth when we go there I decided to try it. About 3 minutes later Wynn and the vet came out just as nice as could be. The vet did say Wynn talked to him the whole time. I have had another vet say something about Wynn being a little spoiled. The room is only a few feet from where I was and has a window in it so it wasn't like they took him down the hall. We did the same thing for Teddy who requires 3 people to trim his nails and all was great with him too. I guess this works better...

Franklin does better with me and so did my last dog, but in general pets tend to do better when their owners aren't there. What may take 2- 3 people with the owner present can often be done with 1 or 2 people without the owner. Many owners (myself included) get a bit tense or nervous when somebody else is restraining their pup or when some kind of procedure is going to be done and our pets feed off that nervous energy.  A lot of people get so worried about letting techs take their dogs to the back, but I can assure you we don't take them back there just to beat them into submission! We do it because 9 times out of 10 they are better when there owners aren't around and we can get away with using much less restraint and the pets are often much calmer! :-)

Sparty is my big baby (pain) at the vets. He definitely does better without me around. My very wonderful and experienced vet says that he thinks many pets scream louder when their family is around with hopes that we will save them. Because of Sparty's foot issues (damaged nail bed as a pup) I always take him in to have his nails clipped.

Wynn definatly SCREAMS louder when I'm in the room...

I had the vet cut Tuckers nails when we went to the vet last.  He gives anyone a heck of a time trimming his nails.  I was in the room at first and then the vet had asked if I could leave the room, maybe he would do better without me there.  So I went into the front waiting area, which is right by the room.  They held him and had him look out the door and distract him that way and then clip his nails, they said that worked the best.  His nails were shorter but I am not sure if they were able to clip all of them, they never said either way and I never asked.

Natalie,

I just started this with Teddy a few months ago and then thought it would be so much easier for me if the vet trimmed Wynn's too. I am so happy that it worked so well.

We tried to get a blood draw from Jack.   No dice.  They suggested he might be better if I left the room, so I did (reluctantly; I know my dog and didn't think it would work).  He screamed in a way I've never heard a dog scream, and was so scared he released his anal glands.  So no, Jack is much worse when I am not there rubbing his neck and saying "Wait, wait."    They DID tell me many dogs are better when the owner leaves, but not Jack.  He's truly terrified, not just looking for sympathy.  He's claustrophobic and wigs out completely no matter how hard he tries to be good.

Maddie is good as gold, whether we are there or not.

My corgis are pretty good at the vet, but most trips have been routine (except for the time Kota ate the whole rubber ring off the bottom of her bowl). But, I have a 15 yr old border collie mix & most of his visits, they take him in the back to do whatever needs to be done, and that is OK w/ me because I know I am nervous and probably making him nervous.  If they try to do anything w/ me in the room,  he is resistant, and a bit snappy/growly, even if I let go of his leash.  They always tell me how good he was when they bring him back in the room (don't know if they are just being nice or if he really is good for them).  He also fights me and my husband when we try to trim his nails, but at the vet, they just go snip snip snip and get it done in about 15 seconds with no drama.  He finds great humor in making me out to be a ridiculous liar.

Generally yes, unless the dog have severe case of separation anxiety.

Every one of mine was different and sometimes depended on what was being done.

Lexus did best if I or my husband was with her no matter what.

Payton and Zin do best for blood draws and nail trims if I'm not present, but otherwise it didn't matter.

Alfie , we've only had a month, and due to him being a rescue with a supposed history of aggression - I requested that I not be present for any procedures and that a tech hold for the exam--He did beautifully!!!

You just have to figure out what works best for each one and why it's so important for you to develop a trusting relationship with your vet.  ....There was one tech that worked for my vet that I did not care for how she handled my pets- so I requested that she NOT handle my pets. My vet honored that request. ...yes, I know he did, because he would tell me if I scheduled something and she was the only tech that day- so I could reschedule it to a day when she wasn't there.

I actually have a new vet that I won't let touch my corgis...cats or shots for the Corgi but NOTHING else:( She's new and slow...even the old vet trims the corgi nails...they know this!!!!!!!

Teddy is a rescue also and  he is the hardest to trim the nails on. Me being there for these 2 is worse!

I'm going by my experience with humans here.  If dogs can be related to children, then the answer is yes.  Children always do better for us if the parents aren't in the room during a procedure.  That being said, I'm not so sure I'd be able to do it!

We are lucky to have a great groomer 8 doors down.  Every other Saturday Roger and the boys jump in the golf cart, off they go to "Aunt Jackies" house for their nail trimming.  Chepstow can walk but Tenby can't walk that far (shoulder problems) they really aren't couch potatoes.  At the Vet I think they prefer us to stay with them.  They are just a little bit spoiled.
