OK, first of all, this is NOT about Sidney. He's fine. I do have a question about my Dad's Aussie, Henna. She's my "sister dog" and she's 14.

On Saturday morning Dad took her and his 2 other dogs to the park. Henna ran around, chased the frisbee, jumped into the car. Then when he got home, she laid down, refused to eat. She's been out in the back yard (she won't come in), still won't eat though she is drinking. She's not breathing hard, but this morning Dad said she's just not looking good. Her paws are cold.

Does anyone know what might cause her to suddenly decline like that? Dad thought stroke, though she was moving fine. I thought if it was her heart she's have labored breathing. As far as we know, she doesn't have cancer, but you never know.

Dad is thinking she won't make it through the day :(

Edited to add: Henna is having surgery right now for a badly absessed infected tooth. She's going to be ok!

I would guess cancer. I had a cat that went quickly like that in just a matter of two days. When I took him in the exam showed a large tumor blocking his rectum. My vet speculated that it was a fast growing cancer. Hope it turns out better for your Dad.
I would take her to the vet asap.

Most common cause of sudden decline in elderly pets is kidney failure.   Frequently you will see vomiting, but not always.  Change in urine output is common but easier to spot in litter-boxed trained cats than in dogs.   Bev is correct that cancer can also come on quite suddenly in older pets and can cause loss of appetite, lethargy, and a general dull look.  My senior cat was fine at an October check-up.  In early December I found a lump and by January she was gone.

I'd take her to the vet.  I don't mean to sound harsh, and hope for the best, but I would give her some big hugs and kisses before taking her.

Could be lymes disease....my lab did this when he was a pup and our english setter's sister did to.  Just went down and got worse and worse.  My vet put them on doxicyclene (sp) which is the anti-biotic for lymes right away.  She said if he wasn't better within 24 they would continue to look for the source.  Within 12 hours both these dogs were up and eating.  It takes too long to get the blood test back for lymes, so they treat sudden things like this that way.  BTW, his next exam blood test tested positive for lymes and did so each year until now (he will be 12) declining each year until undetectable.

Good Luck!  I will pray...

So sorry...don't have a clue but your dad may be right with the cold feet as something might be shutting down. I guess if she's comfortable I might just watch her and see as not to give her anymore trauma. How just she react if he sits with her?

Please let us know  how he's doing!

Sounds like relatively good news.

I went to see Dad and Henna after work. He said she was a bit more energetic today, even tried to go with him when he took the other 2 dogs to the park. I tried to give her a little canned food, she licked a bit up and spit it out. I told Dad that I wonder if she's got a bad tooth, considering everything else with how she was acting. He finally decided to take her to the vet, and they said bring her in right away.

The result of the vet exam: a badly absessed, infected tooth. She's in surgery now to remove the tooth and clean up her gums. No wonder the poor old girl was miserable. She'll be feeling much better soon, and Dad is sooo relieved, he was just not ready for the old girl to go yet.

So glad it was just a tooth!
Great news!!!
Fabulous news. Let us know when she gets out of surgery if you have the chance.
Yay, GOOD NEWS!  I hope she recovers fast....and I bet she will:)  hugs to both Dad and Henna!
What a happy ending...poor girl!
Dad got the call this afternoon that Henna came through her procedure just fine. They found a second absessed tooth and removed that one too. Thank you all so much for your help and concern! Oh, and her bloodwork shows nothing else is wrong :)
