@Rebecca and Jen: If you are methodical you can teach yourself at home by setting up some simple shots.  On another Corgi site I'm slowly working on a thread about taking pictures of Corgis but demonstrating simple techniques.  The first installment is here.  One of the real fundamentals of good photos is recognizing whether or not the light is right to allow a nice shot. Understanding the exposure relationship between shutter, aperture, and ISO is next.  One of the most common mistakes with photos is simply not getting the horizon level and that one is easily fixed by a bit of practice holding the camera and pausing for a moment to see where the horizon is.  After a while it becomes a habit and you'll get the horizon pretty good automatically as your eye gets trained.

Jen, the D3000 is a MUCH better choice than the D40.  The D40 is a fairly old model now and is missing some nice features found in newer models.  You can get very nice pictures with a point & shoot if you understand the light and how to maximize the capabilities of the camera.

that would be so cool to take a photography class! i cant stop taking pics of teddy lol i have this perfect picture in my head that i hope to get one day.

its in the fall with him sitting down next to a tree with leaves all around and its more focused on him with a very soft, almost blurred back ground with the sun light softened as its close to dusk and teddy is sitting with his side to u looking off or at u with his "corgi smile" but the tip of his tongue sticking out and he is wearing his orange collar to really bring out the fall look.

i hope one day to bring that photo to life :) heres the look i am talking about but i wish i could place that with the back ground i am dreaming of

So jealous!  I wish I could take a photography course.  I've been dying to improve my camera skills, but I just don't have the time to take a course.  I try my best to use online resources, but it's hard when I can't see someone actually adjusting the settings/lenses and seeing the results.  Hopefully I'll start to get the hang of it soon, though.

Anneliese the class is wonderful but its so confusing since our teacher talks about LSR's and i only have a cute dinky point and shoot LOL.. im thinking of getting a Nikon D40 or a Nikon D3000 :)
Learning about lenses and stuff as well never knew how much things can change with a changing of a lens :D
Ace is definatly a Camera Hog lol he LOVES getting his pic taken~

That's awesome, Ace and Jen! I took a photography class in college too (plus a Photoshop class and soon more graphic design classes), since I love photography so much. I think Scout is very photogenic, but one of our family cats always comes when we have the camera, making her "I'm so pretty" face. That cat is such a camera hog.

I've got a bunch of pictures of Scout and I plan on uploading some more soon.

Im in my 3rd term of College and i decided to take a photography class for extra credit and the first day of class i hear my teacher discussing sneaking her dogs into class and i was like "we can bring our dogs to class?" and she was like shhhh lol then she asked me what kind of dog i have.. I told her A Corgi.. she practically squeeled with delight turns out she has two of her own.. and she LOVES the pictures i have taken of Ace.. hoping to improve :D
