Livvy is great at herding our 2 goats...Wynn is my chicken herder and protecks them from the other corgis especially when they are little he accompanies me into the shed to check on them and NOBODY better mess with his chicks! I get the little ones also. We had the most beautiful 3 ducks that ran kind of like penguins but they were so messy they went to a neighbor with a real pond!

LOL...yeah.  Big Jim was supposed to be a hen, too, but I guess he decided he'd rather be a rooster.  It's hard when you get them at a day old to tell them apart, but one rooster out of 8 hens isn't bad.  I hate getting the pullets that have already been debeaked, you know?  Poor little girls.  So, rather have the lil peeps (they're just too cute anyways) and take my chances with another rooster.  I've got a happy flock now of 14 hens and Jim, plus 4 ducks and 2 drakes.  I wish I could get one of the corgs to herd the ducks, but so far not much luck.  Annie likes to herd the goats next door.  She hasn't tried with the cows...well, except for rolling in cow poop....::sigh::

Prince Albert also had his "favorites" to attack and only got me a couple times...he went to another farm since I couldn't have him for soup. he's hopefully living out his old life  with many other chickens:) Love the umbrella trick...will keep that in mind. I think the only reason Big Red is so much nicer is that we ordered about 12 hens that year and there ended up being 3 roosters so he was low on the rooster roster!

Jane, I hear ya!  I was having trouble with Big Jim, but so didn't want to souppot him.  He won a blue ribbon at the fair last year and he is soooo protective...so far I haven't lost a single hen in 3 year to anything (knock on wood and all that).  So, what I started doing when he'd get uppity with me (which he was doing more and more) was to bring one of those automatic popopen  umbrellas with me when I was around him.  He'd start his display of "oh I'm so big and mean (and he was)" I'd just pop open the big pink umbrella right in front of his cocky ol' beak and he'd stop dead in his tracks!  My display was bigger than his!  And pink, too!  So, he's not bothered me for quite a bit.  He will go after certain other folks he doesn't like much, though, so he's in the chicken enclosure when company is over.

OMG....Ellen, we have had a couple chickens over the years lose some feathers also but only once did the rooster lose any. We did have to give away Prince Albert though as he was even attacking our Aussie and people:(

I wish I had actually evidence of all the crimes committed by my three, but sadly, it's usually just the aftermath that I see.  I do have a story however.  A couple weeks ago there was a HUGE ruckus underneath the back deck...screetching, howling, whining, crying, banging, pots smashing, cackling, growling, every possible OMG noise....well, after much useless arm waving and yelling on my part, Nimh came bolting out from under the deck, zoomed past me and up to the kitchen door and inside.  A second later my ginormous rooster, Big Jim, came racing past me wings a'flappin up to the safety of his coop.  Now, mind you, Jim as ginormous spurs to go with his ginormous roostertude so I went after Nimh to check for punctures (only a bitty one on top of his nose) but when I went to find Big Jim, well....he was sulking because he'd lost EVERY SINGLE ONE of his big gorgeous irridescent black tail feathers!  Just some stubbles left!  I guess Nimh had gotten too close to Jim's girls.  Jim's very very protective, and although Nimh would never bother the girls, Jim probably decided he wasn't going to chance it.  Suffice it to say that they now give each other a very very wide berth.
