Hi, I'd like to tell you about how we adopted Paco.
I've been waiting all my life to own my own dog. A little over a year ago I finally got the chance to seriously find one. Of course, I turned to the local humane society. My fiance and I went to the shelter at least once a week for a few months. Although there were lots of great dogs we had a hard time finding our dog. One weekend we went through and I noticed Paco, a very timid and sad dog. I noticed he was a corgi and pointed it out to my fiance. It was obvious Paco was not happy to be there. He was so sad that I couldn't get him to come to the door to give him a pet. We moved on. We visited a few days later and this time when we came to Paco's pen my fiance noticed him too and Paco was a bit more responsive. We decided to take him for a walk and get to know him better. We ended up spending over an hour with him. We talked over our finances and decided to put an offer on him. My previous experiences with shelters is that they give you 24 hours to get the paper work in order then you pick them up. They instead sent us over to the adoption office while they took Paco to get him packed up. We went through Paco's past and his behavior tests and discovered some of his flaws. Since we're both dog people we decided we could handle his dominance issues, separation anxiety, and lapse in house breaking. What was more interesting was to learn that Paco had been adopted a few months earlier from the same shelter and returned due to issues that weren't around when he was first dropped off. He was renamed and didn't respond to his new name Paco but he didn't respond to his old name Pavlov either. We weren't crazy about the name Paco, but as the days and then weeks drew on we didn't come up with a better one and so Paco stuck.
And to make a long story not so long, we took Paco home that night, scrambled to the pet store to buy supplies and were off to a great start with a new great dog. What we didn't know at the time we were looking for our dog was that we weren't dog people. We were and are Corgi people.

Carissa, welcome! I am in a similar situation. We adopted our 10 months old boy recently. He was bought from a pet store at a mall. But he is a great little fellow.

Hi everyone! I am a rather new Corgi mom, and really value the advice and tips from members of this community! Wylie was adopted as a pup, but he came out of a puppy mill rescue. He is the best puppy. We are greatful to the woman who fostered him until we found him.

Natalia- Congrats on your new little rescue! Tod sounds like he's going to be a nice addition to your family.

Our story. When we made our minds to rescue a corgi (female) we e-mailed a local rescue agency rep (a wonderful lady who is on this board)...Two days later she mentioned someone was about to give up a 10 mos old corgi boy. We were set on a red+white girl, and wanted to keep looking a bit longer. But I kept going back to Tod's photos....There was much prayer and family council. We decided to go ahead and adopt Tod. It's been only 12 days from the day of my initial contact with the rescue agency to picking our boy up. He's been with us just for one week, and we couldn't be happier! Looking forward to get to know Tod better.....

Kristen- Good for you! I love hearing about the kindness and patience we all find in ourselves to help these innocent dogs. Another wonderful story!

I adopted Fern in May from a rescue organization in Missouri. She was a breeding dog at a Puppy mill for three years. When she went to the rescue organization she had an inconitnence problem...She was in foster care--outside for six months before we took her home. Nobody wanted a "leaky Corgi" I guess. They even lowered the adoption fee hopingto find her a forever home. She has been a real sweetheart. We determined that her incontinence was do to a congential issue--an ectopic uretur--the tube from one of her kidneys by passed the bladder spilling inside and leaking outside. Our vet researched and tested our little girl to make the diagnosis. We have a Wonderful vet! Fern had to go to Iowa State vet school for surgery last week.--she just got her staples out Friday. Fern has a personality that will melt you heart and every one who meets her just loves her. When I took her to the vet to get her staples out his entire staff had to stop in to say hi to her and give her a hug! The notes on her surgical record from Iowas STate made comments about her sweet demeanor. She still has a tiny drip, but nothing compared to her problem before and I think even that will go away with time. She is thrilled to be able to sit on your lap. She is easily startled and still has issues from her earlier life, but she fits in with our other three Corgis and I can't imagine life without her.
