Once again it is still VERY early in our training, but I was very happy to have our trainer tell us that Maggie would make a great Therapy dog. She has the personality for it. Plus the added bonus of having my husband decide it would be something he would like to do with her also !!

My little Cardigan Myrtle is now a certified Delta dog! http://myrtlefrisby.com/ We are both just starting out, so we haven't done any visits yet. I look forward to reading other experiences here and will be sure to share mine once we start!

It took the longest for Baron to get to the down position as well.  I took an extra special treat and used it to lure him down.  Check out the following website.  It has video's to help you.  www.loveyourdog.com/tricks.html  You can also google fun tricks for dogs.  The first site that comes up - Dog tricks is helpful.

I finally took some extra time and looked into what Michigan requires for a dog to become a "therapy dog". Quite a bit more involved than I thought, especially considering we are only on our third week of puppy school : ) . So far Maggie is proving to be VERY stubborn. We are however starting a bit late (she is almost 8 months old), hopefully working with her daily will get us to where we need to be...eventually. I would love some tips on how to get her into the "down" position, she simply refuses to have both ends down at the same time. I am used to training bigger dogs.  The main thing we have going for us is that Maggie moo has not met a person or thing (wheelchair, crutches, etc...) that she has not been good with.

Selphie and myself and my boyfriend went to a small "party" of sorts thrown by my chinese professors, we were making traditional chinese food and mingling with their families. Selphie was SO excited and happy, she loved on everyone there, lol.... And she could even listen when my boyfriend gave her commands, I'm super excited that she is able to listen even with a lot of people around... My hopes are getting higher every day, haha.

Hi and "thanks" for the positive comments! The basic training and obedience classes are a must for this plus socialization to people,other dogs,strange noises and listening to you during periods of lots of excitement. The further you take your dog with these things the easier it will be for them to focus on what they will need to do when they start doing therapy dog!

Hi and welcome. I'm am just beginning this path myself. I found a really nice obedience trainer in our area and enrolled Ein in her basic dog training 101 class. She has experience training therapy dogs, so she is recommending that we take her basic 101 class, and her intermediate class. She said that this will get us well on our way and that she can assign special homework for us that will help us in that direction as well. She also knows what organization to contact in our area to get her tested and certified. So my advice would be to find a trainer in your area that does the basic obedience classes, but also has experience training therapy dogs. That way they can help you from day one on your journey to training a therapy dog. I am so excited that we have started down that path. Good luck and have fun. ~Heather

Hi everyone :) My boy is really good with kids and our obedience trainer mentioned that he might enjoy working as a therapy dog. I am so happy to have found this group because I have no idea where to start to get him on that path. I look forward to reading your guys' tips on here :)
