Clicker training and the Park

Didi and I have been trying out clicker training, (As per Sylvia & Timmy's advice) and it's been going very well. It's nice to be able to have her know exactly what she's being rewarded for. It can be find of difficult to get her to figure out if she's being rewarded for sitting,, looking at me, or just getting cookies because mommy likes her. Now she knows that clicker means "correct!" and she's a lot less confused. Before when she got confused she'd just start going through different… Continue

Puppy intolerance.

Didi's only 9 months old, but she's gotten intolerant of male puppies. She's ok (if a little timid) around most dogs at the dog part; she loves white pitbulls and boston terriers, but there's something about male puppies that makes her really scared. She tucks her butt in and tries to get away from them and finally, if they don't leave her around, she stripes, snarls and barks at them. (She has a really shrill, girly bark.)

I'm not sure if I should try to stop this, or if I should let her… Continue

The Front Door

Didi has been spending the last few days learning new door manners.

Whenever someone comes to the door, she gets to sit by the pillar in the foyer. She doesn't like this at all. She tries to look away from me and creep towards the door (and the people coming through it) like I don't see her. Or she army crawls toward the door, with her feet on the rug she's supposed to be at, like she's trying to steal home or something.

On the bright side, now when the doorbell rings, she runs… Continue

Older!

Didi is getting spoiled today because Petco has this sale where if you buy a 6-10lb bag of Wellness, you get 4 free cans of dogfood. Today Venison and Sweet Potato is mixed in with her delicious foods.

Needless to say, today we did not have any issues with getting her to eat dinner. She wolfed it down like nobody's business, and was even polite enough to give a belch afterwards. Don't eat so fast puppet.

I took her to the dogpark today but it was way too hot so no one showed up. We… Continue

Frusterating lack of lap dogs... (Advice wanted).

My father has Alzheimer's, and I was hoping that my corgi would bond with him so that when my mom and I have to be gone, my dad has company. He sometimes gets confused with the TV and gets 'lost' as to what to do.

One problem, my dad wants the dog to sit with him in a wierd sort of upright position. I can't explain to him why the dog doesnt want to do this, but now the dog avoids him and he asserts that she doesn't like him.

Is there a way that I can get the dog to tolerate this, at… Continue

Eating again!

The new feeding regime is working. Didi gets either her Wellness mixed with wet food (she gets a half-can and a half cup split between two meals), or mixed with unsalted, unseasoned broth (i cook alot so i have load of this around). We sit with the bowl for 10 minutes, no playing or pettings or toys or walking off to lie down. So far she's eaten her food every time. Eating beats the hell out of being bored!

This weekend I took her to my boyfriend's house to play with his Norfolk… Continue

Pet Peeve!

I go through a lot of trouble to have a good puppy. I got her at a time when I knew I'd have several weeks free to be with her and train her, I am very diligent about being consistent and about her leash training. I want, and have, a good dog, through work.

I get REALLY annoyed when I am walking my puppy down the sidewalk (her on my right, walking just beside me) and someone with a dog (usually several) on a stretchy leash is coming on. They pull all their dogs to the side, pull them up,… Continue

Bully Sticks - WOW

Holy Canolli!

I went to the store to buy bully sticks because I'd heard people raving about them.

My Corgi puppy, who plows through nylabones in 20 minutes or less, massacres greenies (which then massacre her insides), has demolished every dentabone and busy bone known to man, has been working on this bully stick for the past hour and a half and has not even gotten an inch in.

She was a little wary of the new taste at first, but I put a pinky smear of peanut butter on it first… Continue

Fleas!

Today I was petting my Corgi and looking at her skin, since we've been having some food allergy issues with her I've been on the look out for scabby patches or flaky spots, and what did I find? Argh!! A flea!

I thought, "Well, She's on Sentinel, she probably just picked one up at the Dog Park. No big deal." And I smooshed it.

I continued on my look over and near her butt fluff, I find another flea. Agh! Smoosh.

I JUST gave her the Sentinel, so I go over and read the box. It says… Continue

Greenies & Nylabone Clones of Greenies

Man, my poor puppy was so sick off these Green chewables the other day. I tried to give it to her and she turned up her nose to it. I should have taken her advice because she's a corgi (and thus knows everything), but I put some peanut butter on it and coaxed her to chew it.
She worked on it during the course of the day, and by the end she was having soft poops of a vibrant green. She was very unhappy, as was I at having to wipe green poop off of her stubby butt.
NEVAR AGAIN.
