I've fostered several dogs now, and 2 of which have been corgis (Winston, and Gunner).
On a normal day I would say that my own 2 rescue corgis are , well, normal. That is until I foster a corgi...

With Winston:

I just thought "Ok, so I have a fluffy and a spaz puppy... that is why they are so different", I could justify that I had no idea what age Winston was, and had no idea on his background. That was just Winston.  Silent, yet strong and unwilling to back down in the face of danger. Also Lazy with a capital L!

After Winston was adopted, life went back to normal. I had normal dogs, and they were normal corgis.

Then came Gunner:

Gunner is 8 months old, Oona is 7 months old... They should be the same, right?

Heck NO!
Now I understand that Oona is half cattle dog. I know that with mix breeds it is often times unpredictable.
But why the heck is Oona so much smaller than Gunner?!?
She is so narrow, and just the same height, and her head is so... small (and therefore normal size for a dog, corgis=bobbleheads)
I always thought of my girls as normal... but now I see that I have two mutant freaks on my hands!
Also, If I keep having all these seemingly normal corgis to foster, why is it that I picked the two mutant freaks to adopt? Is this some sort of kindred, geek outcast love?
I thought I love corgis... but maybe I really just like dogs that look as though they should be part of a peepshow in a circus?

Please gather round and mystify your mind as you gaze at:
And be amazed as this dog that isn't even looking at you can tell you what you were just talking about:Because moral of this story is Bowties and Radar ears are cool! Trust me, I'm The Doctor.

Thanks for the pics, Jane! Cute Chihuahuas!
I started calling Oona blue merle before we had her tested, to me she also looks blue merle not ticked/mottled. After the DNA test came through I asked a friend that works at his dads vet office why she didn't have the same coat as a blue heeler. He informed me that sometimes a pure heeler will also have larger splotches and less smaller ticks, but not often.
As for chihuahua, the body shape is similar, and so is the size, but Oonas head is not corgi shaped or chihuahua shaped.
A mystery indeed...
for now I will continue to call her corgi/heeler mix because of the DNA test and because people won't simply accept "cute mutt" as a reply :P

Technically cattle dogs don't come in merle, it's just the dense ticking that makes them look mottled. I believe they are all born white as well. Oona looks very blue merle to me, but I think she may remain a mystery! She's cute no matter what of course. :)

I did find a couple of pics of blue merle chihuahuas, I guess they are normally considered oversized for the breed and usually ending up at about 10 lbs.Yes I have way too much time on my hands! haha

Okay I'm done now! :)

If you go to Josh Rougeaux's (gee I hope I got that right) page, he has a corgi/cattle dog mix as well. Although his has more "ticking" and much more brown, Loki is similar to Oona... Then again, I thought she was normal so don't trust my eyes! :P

Wow, only 12 lbs, maybe corgi x chihuahua? I think they call them "chigis" lol....

That would make more sense of that almost all white pup that was in the litter I suppose. I can't imagine any combo of corgi x cattle dog would make a parti-colored puppy but I could be wrong!

Maybe Oona is a dapple dachshund mixed with a corgi? :0

@bev, I think you may be right, corgi owners by themselves tend to be a bit strange! *stares at everyone in this forum

@Jane, we had her DNA tested when she was around 14 weeks old. Although my vet doesn't have much faith in those tests. We were planning on her being a 30-40 pound dog, now I will feel lucky if she gets to 20pounds. Currently she is 12LBS. Maybe she is half alien, to me she doesn't look like any breed at all!

Haha too funny! Oona is so cute, are you sure she's part cattle dog? I've never seen a cattle dog with that type of merle, and you'd think she would be bigger than normal if anything.

Ha ha LaRissa! I know what you are saying because my Sparty is the weirdest dog and is definitely my "heart dog". Previous to him a Siamese cat named Luke was my special furry child. Sparty is often difficult and very strong willed. Luke was unfriendly to everyone but my husband and me. He was famous for attacking the glass by our door when people rang the bell. I often had to close him up when we had visitors but to me he was my shadow. Sparty doesn't hesitate to bark or growl to get his point across. I wondered what it says about me that I love the flawed animals best! You love the unusual. I think that is great! Hmmm, again what does that mean? I wonder if all corgi lovers are attracted to the unusual? After all our dogs frequently draw stares and giggles. Not really a bad thing in my opinion. Your fostering is a great thing!
