Title says it all. My poor, darling husband was cuddling our 4 month old Ace on his lap when suddenly, a most vile and putrid liquid oozed its way on to his arm and the fabric of the chair. Apparently it smelled vaguely fishy and most definitely satanic, so I'm putting a 90% possibility on it being anal gland discharge. Now, Ace hasn't done any of the warning signs that usually accompany "full" glands - he hasn't done the butt scootch, or excessively scratched/licked at his posterior.
I'm kind of puzzled as to why those glands expressed liquid when they were neither full nor showing signs of irritation (there is no redness/swelling in the area, and his poos are firm). I read that some dogs can express them when they are in a panic/fear mode, but Ace was in paradise when the fishbutt hit.

We had to take our Freckles, he's not a corgi but we love him anyway :-) in to the vet for anal gland "problem". I was standing by the table while the vet was expressing them. The vet tells me I might want to stand in a different spot. I had JUST moved when all of a sudden there was a spraying that hit the wall right where I HAD been standing. I consider that my LUCKY Day....
Apologies to your husband-I couldn't stop myself from laughing when I read "Apparently it smelled vaguely fishy and most definitely satanic"
While my corgi does not do this often, my parent's dog, Dozer, who is a Rat Terrier mix, does this ALL the time. He has no anal gland irritation but just "squirts" fairly often. While usually he does this when he is surprised, in an uncomfortable position or scared. He will also sometimes do this when he is relaxed and I guess releases whatever excess he has? When we first got Dozer we were concerned something was wrong with him but the vet had assured us that it was normal, some dogs are just like this, and unless it began to show signs of irritation not to worry. My family has had him for 4 years, he's now 6, and he is just fine, although does "squirt."
Skyler, my corgi, has done this once. I came home from work and my husband was sitting on the couch and he exclaimed, "Sky smells!!!" I found remnants of Sky having "squirted" and cleaned it up... I have no idea why my husband didn't try to clean up the dog and couch, it was STIIINKY! ^_~
