A cougar just killed a small dog in Idaho in a fenced yard.  Witnessed by owner.

The cougar was likely following its prey base -- deer -- which often enter towns.   If you have deer around, remember that you might have their predators also.

Consider a savvy bobcat's point of view:  you notice that a certain morsel emerges from a certain house every morning at the same time.  Not hard to figure out.  So depending on where youy live, you might want to accompany Fido into the yard first thing in the morning....

There are lots of coyotes here in urban Seattle.

Of course, idiots texting while driving are a far more common lethal hazard.

Thank you for the warning. We have coyotes that have roamed our neighborhood before and did kill someone's dog. The owner's posted up warning signs through out the neighborhood warning pet parents to keep their cats indoors and to watch their dogs when outside. I've never seen one in person in the neighborhood, but I hear them often in the mornings when I'm out jogging with Noodles (since it is at 4AM).

We have coyotes in the woods behind our house and I am amazed at the number of people that have their cats outside in our nieghborhood! I see carcasses in our woods regularly. So sad..

I see people here let their tiny toy dogs play in summer in the field right at the edge of the woods after dusk.   I have warned that we are quite sure there are coyotes in the woods, but people look at us like we're a little bit off our rocks so I have just stopped warning them.

We have coyotes and it sends chills up my spine when I hear them...during the day my dogs can go out by themselves and stay in our yard (except Bella) BUT at night they go in large fence right outside the door so that they are safe and we also have motion detecting lights for the fence. We did loose 2  outside cats last year and I think they left our yard:(

We have heard of an occasional cougar around here but never has it been substantiated.

My mother had serious coyote issues at her house this past winter. The pack was seen in their yard. When I visit her Becca is always well supervised outside, especially at night. In February I was out with Becca and Mom's lab, coyotes howled, the lab ran for the house. Becca looked at me like she was saying "Oh what is that? Can I go see?". She went out on leash after that.

Just a wonder...can parvo or or other diseases be passed between coyotes and dogs?

We had a member of our Therapy Dog Club who's 1st Bassett Hound was killed by a coyote and their new one was on the back porch when one came up and luckily they were right inside BUT the Coyote came across the field toward the house the next day in daylight also,,,scary!

Yes, Parvo can pass from coyotes to dogs, and from dogs to coyotes.

Coyotes will also "lure" dogs out into the field:(

When I was in college a coyote came up behind the barn. My border collie chased it down the potato field and three chased her back. She was running all out and it was a very close call. I'm more than a little paranoid with Becca when we visit Mom's.

I would be too.

I was on a trail ride with three of us on horses and four dogs. A coyote followed us and was barking at the dogs for a quarter mile. Definitely a new sound for them to make! Luckily we were on the way home and the dogs were tired so they stayed with us. Stayed away from that trail after that - usually it is just me, the horse and Ein and I didn't want to run into freaky coyotes.

Usually they are just trying to move you away from a den site or something.   Normally they are only a concern for small dogs, though more rarely larger dogs can be attacked.   Small dogs they see either as prey, or as competition for food sources.  Larger dogs are normally only attacked if they are defending a den.

Coyotes are in many areas and they are not evil, but they deserve respect, that's for sure.
