Pupsicles: Fun summer treat!

This has been posted before, but it's that time of year when the temperatures climb and pups get hot on a walk.

Rather than spend a lot of money on pet-store frozen treats, you can easily make your own at home.

Get one small container of plain unsweetened yogurt, mash one very ripe banana, mix in a couple tablespoons of peanut butter, and freeze in ice cube trays for perfect Corgi-sized treats! I've seen other recipes that add honey or molasses, but I don't see the need for added sugar; the banana is sweet enough.

For variety, replace the banana and peanut butter with some canned pumpkin and a few blueberries. Yum! Or make savory pops by mixing in a small jar of chicken-only baby food (it's sufficiently mushed to mix right in without a blender).

Mine love them after a walk.

linus loves frozen things! he tried his first piece of watermelon today. it was so funny, he just chased it around the floor at first, licking the trail it made. lol. i got him the kong frozen treat kit (was on mega clearance last year) and he loves the treats that that makes, but i'm out of the mix, so i can't wait to try these new recipes for him!

Canned pumpkin can also be used this way. "Pumpkin cubes" are very popular in our house right now.^_^

I carry the chillybuddy cooling vest on summer hikes. I do think it helps. Lightweight.

Carry it in a plastic bag. Add water to wet it (important). You can use leftover dog-drinking-water when water is scarce.

Medium size. They make custom sizes for $15 extra: think about a Medium length with a Small girth. I have a Medium and shortened the girth strap.

I make these for Rosie and Rocky and they love them!! I make them in yogurt cups half full and then put a small dog biscuit on the top to keep my husband from eating them!! I don't add any sweetener either. The banana is plenty. Be sure to use regular yogurt not the artificially sweetened kind.

Yes, that's an excellent warning: artificial sweeteners can be toxic to dogs and a lot of "lite" yogurts now have half sugar and half artificial sweetener, so you need to read the entire ingredient list.

Yikes! I don't buy low fat anything or anything with high fructose corn syrup either. Artificial sweeteners are toxic to people as well, just not in a way that you'll notice it. They contain neuro-toxins which affect brain function....

The more people monkey around with food sources, the further I run in the opposite direction :D

I made my first batch of Popsicles today and Bogart approved when he tried his first sample. I push the small frozen cube into the Kong for a more challenging snack. Before I was just using frozen pumpkin cubes, this gives us some variety!
