I've always used a harness with dogs and never had a problem, but recently I've been hearing a lot of bad things from some friends and family members who've used harnesses on their dogs. I'd like to inquire on opinions on which they prefer, collar or harness for when you take your corgi out and about. I'd like to hear the pros and cons of each to help me decide which would be better to go with. I want the best for my corgi and I don't want him to get hurt in any way.

Just as with many differing opinions as to what food to feed them, you will hear different opinions regarding collars and harnesses. I have always used collars, I trained my dogs for obedience. But Max developed a calcification in his neck so I have to use a harness to walk him but he wears a collar with his tags at all times. Katie still gets walked with her collar.
Read the different opinions, think about what your dog is like...does he pull all the time...and then you can decide what is best for you and your dog.
I have always used collars. I do use a Martingale for unfamiliar territory or even send one with for my pups.
One thing about a harness...corgis aren't easy to fit because of their deep chests and short legs. I tried a couple of different ones on Max...either they were a nightmare to get on or he walked right out of it because it wouldn't adjust enough for his legs. I will see if I can find a link to the type I ended up with that is easy, comfortable and he stays in it.
This is the kind I have. I found it at my groomers. http://www.wag.com/dog/p/doggles-sierra-dog-supply-apex-harness-107192
I have been using harnesses.
Yes, trainers have told us that using regular harnesses encourage dogs to pull.
After doing research, we decided on the Easy Walk Harness by Petsafe.
Bentley is currently using the Easy Walk Harness. It prevents him from pulling and he doesn't choke when walking with a traditional nylon collar. (We don't use choke collars or martingale collars).
We have to clip his leash onto both the Easy Walk harness and his regular collar to prevent him from stepping out of the harness due to his short stature.
He love's to put on his harness and go out for walks.
Thanks everyone who has commented so far! I really appreciate all the thoughts and opinions on this topic.
I like harness's, and have a collar on to keep tags on my pups. I like the harness's that are comfortable looking, and I do not keep it on all the time. The idea with the harness is so the pressure is put on their chest, similar to us wearing seat belts in cars. I do not like the concept of my dog choking himself if he pulls, or I pull, but truth be told there can be more control of your dog if you walk with a collar instead of a harness. So long as you have a happy dog, I do not see anything wrong with whatever decision you make.
If you plan on doing classes I would also suggest a collar. The AKC classes we went to you needed a collar not a harness...just a thought.
For any kind of training classes you will need to use a collar. Years ago we used the metal "choke" collars but today, at least in the club I trained with, they use the nylon collar that works short of on the same prinicple. It adjusts if you need to correct him. I only went with the harness because of Max's neck. He can't have any pressure on it.
Tracy....take a look at the link I posted for the harness I use. I have a medium for Max but he is a large corgi...37 lbs plus a fluffy so it had to fit around all his fur. It adjusts easily and he can't walk out of it.
Sage had a prong collar for her classes...only dog I ever needed one for...per her AKC instructor. She did well it though.
I use a collar for classes, but use a harness for walks. I started using a harness when my papillon had thyroid cancer. That way my corgi knows when we're working and when we're having fun. I am considering not using the harness because of the sizing issue.
We use martingale collars. They do not choke the dog when fitted correctly, and helps prevent them from backing out of their collar. I'm not a fan of harnesses personally, they can be very hard to fit a corgi properly and can encourage pulling as well.
If you're getting a puppy I would just buy a cheap regular buckle collar for now, because he or she will outgrow it suuuuper fast.
Maple prefers a harness. A collar bugs her lol
