Flea & heartworm meds
This is something we will discuss with the vet once we get the puppy, but I wanted to know what everyone else does.
At what age do you start using heartworm & flea/tick meds? What brand do you guys prefer?
I would also like to hear the same thing about vitamins, what kind, brands, etc.
I heard coconut oil is a very good supplement, I've been giving it to my cat for a while now and her coat is even shinier than before and she even seems to get hair balls a lot less often.
Do any of you give coconut oil to your dogs or use it topically?

I believe you can start heartworm and flea preventative at 8 weeks, but definitely check with your vet. We use Heartgard Plus and Frontline plus.

Check with your vet about when to start treatments. I also use Heartguard Plus and Frontline Plus. The only supplement I use is fish oil. Max gets very dry skin in the winter and it helps to prevent that. Both have shiny coats and it does help a bit to control shedding...as much as anything can help control a corgi shedding. It's also suppose to have the same heart benefits for dogs as it does for humans.

I use trifexis which is flea control, heartworm and wormer all in one pill. But my corgi goes out to the horse barn and sheep herding so a wormer is needed! Fish oil is great for their joints - Ein tore her acl at 4 years (herding accident) and her vet said it is the best supplement to prevent future issues.

If you are feeding a quality kibble or prepared food you should not need vitamins.
We use TriHeart Plus and K9Advantix. Both are started when the dog is still a young puppy. Probably you'll start with your first visit.
I don't know much about coconut oil. I would say hold off on supplements til the pup has grown; you don't want to interfere with nutrient absorption or anything during that critical phase.

A puppy probably won't need it, but we put coconut oil on the pads of my nearly 2 year old corgi because the cold has really been drying them out. It makes me feel better than using anything with chemicals because he cleans his feet a lot.

Thank goodness neither of these critters are things we have to worry about in our part of the country.
The vet informed me that I didn't need to worry about feeding expensive Heartgard tablets to the dog if I did not live near one of the fake lakes favored by idiotic developers some years ago. And none of my dogs have ever had fleas. With xeric landscaping, ticks are also a rarity.

My vet said I don't need to be too worried about heart worm, she has seen one case in 3 years in socal. norcal is different so maybe ask your vet on that one.
My friends near the beach and a swamp with a border collie swear by advantix. They said frontline didnt work.
Here's what my vet said to that - advantix is better if you aren't going to be regular with it, but you see more scratching and so you start medication (I believe thats what my beach friends do.) Advantix will get the fleas when they are there.
Frontline only really works well if its used regularly and before the fleas hit. :)
