Hello corgi lovers!

My new corgi Sun is getting better and better at pooping and peeing outdoors instead of indoors. :) However, one issue really bothers me: She will ONLY do her business on grass at the park. I can walk her for hoooouuurs on pavement or soil but she will hold it in until we get to some grass.

I would love for her to learn how to do her business on the edge of the sidewalk, as sometimes when it's raining or windy here it is absolutely not possible to walk around too long, much less all the way to the park.

Any tips on teaching her to potty on pavement and soil would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Lottie, dogs develop a preference for SURFACE very early in life and Sun probably was used to only going on grass and actually thinks it's wrong to go on the sidewalk or dirt. Teach her a word for going to the bathroom and reward her with a treat when she does ( you can do it on the grass at first ). Once she knows the word and will do her business on command, then try taking her where there is less grass, some dirt and slowly she may get used to go on dirt or on other natural surfaces. I had a German Shepherd that I had found in the USA just before moving to Italy. We took her with us to Rome and there was not a blade of grass anywhere in walking distance. She did not go for 3 days, I was worried sick!

I think it's instinctive. In the past, when I've had carpets or throw rugs in some parts of the house (the shack is now fully paved in tile), dawgs of all varieties have preferred soft spots for peeing, pooping, and barfing. Evereeee time!

I had the same trouble finding even a tiny spot of grass last winter in the frozen tundra. The snow was so deep and so frozen I had to eek out a tiny spot that passed as grass. As you might expect, I got that under the breath corgi grumble - "Errrr..." - and disgusted look, each time, but it did work. Minus the extreme temps, I bet one special, high-value treat offered only as an extreme reward might work. Just a guess of course.

Good luck! Sophie refuses to eliminate on anything but grass or dirt. A few years ago, in the morning after a two-day snow storm with 4 foot snow drifts blocking our back door and three feet of snow out the front door, I shoveled a potty spot on the front porch so she could do her morning jobs. HA! Her nibs refused to do anything until I had spent an hour, shoveling by hand (snow blower was in the detached garage --- that was about another hour of shoveling to get to it), a path down the front walk and onto the grass. The snow was so heavy and deep and drifted that it was like shoveling four times the distance since I had to do it in layers. Good thing she's so cute!

Just remembered that Sophie was getting treatment and seemed to be feeling a bit better over the holidays. I hope the new year finds you both doing well. Good luck with Sun, Lottie. We have more grass than sidewalks where I live so I would have to walk for hours to find a sidewalk, but when the ground is covered in ice and snow there is almost no place to go. I am not a fan of using those puppy pads in the house,  but I wonder if you brought one outside would she use it? Of course you would have to carry a much bigger doggy bag to dispose of it, but it maybe it could be an option?

would u be able to get the potty patch? its synthetic grass and encourages dogs to go. u do have to clean it but im sure it would be better than walking for hours to find a spot to potty

Wait, what? Does this actually work?

The Queen of the Universe feels house-training is an effete luxury, and she declines to use anything so working-class as the doggy door. So if I don't spot her gazing soulfully at the back door, she deposits a gift in the family room.

I fear my friends who have offered to babysit me while I convalesce from the next Adventure in Surgical Science will be less than thrilled with this trait. Do you think a potty patch would attract Her Majesty to a specific site, thereby simplifying cleanup? Can this thing be laundered after it's been rinsed with the hose?

Good news! Sun has pooped on the pavement a couple of time, I guess it was an emergency and she couldn't hold it. She looked at me looking VERY guilty for some reason, but I praised her a lot and gave her a jackpot amount of treats.

Still not seen her pee anywhere but on grass though, so that issue remains... I will look into a potty patch if needed but I'd really rather she learn to go on the street haha.
