I've never had a dog that I really needed to groom before so I'm a bit out of my league here. But Freya seems to hate being groomed a lot. I try and brush her at least once ore more in a week with either a an undercoat pick or the not Furminator. She always barks and yelps. I try my best to be gentle but towards her hind legs she seems to have a huge issue with it.

Is this normal? Is it cause I'm interrupting her play time with her brother?

Sounds like she is trying to get you to stop at that area. It might be a ticklish spot or something. Duncan HATES to be brushed (typically little boy...LOL), and getting his hind quarters are a battle. Just keep being gentle and get as much as you can.
It can be uncomfortable but if you have a Drama Queen or King like I do it really is more the idea of it. I gave up trying to get Sparty to stand for grooming years ago and just muzzle him and do it now. He doesn't seem at all upset when I am done so I guess he just can not control himself during the grooming. Izzy squirms a little but I groom her with no problems. Just my experience! Good luck!
Jordan hates the furminator he runs behind the couch if he see's the hated yellow thing in my hand. I thought it was hurting him somehow because he wouldn't stay still unless my bf was holding him. So I don't use the really expensive furminator =(
I went and bought one of those stripping loop things and Jordan tolerates that well enough that I don't need help grooming him any more
Mine all like to be groomed now except Livvy...who runs and hides and I have to put her on a leash...I just sit outside and they come up and wait for their turn...I thing that after awhile they get used to it and realize it feels good but it takes some longer to figure that out!!! I have this big rubber 2 sided brush that fits on my hand and they love it and it take alot of hair off of them...maybe try something else I...I also use the softer horse curry brushes...my guess is that you are also interupting playtime....
Oh she loves her play time! I've been trying to find a slicker brush that cleans itself---but I haven't found one for a good price yet. She is ok with the undercoat comb...um I think it's more of rake than a comb. She likes that well enough--but she loathes the furbuster. I wonder if the slicker will take out a fair amount of hair?
Mine love to be groomed...they line up for it and when I'm done a few of them keep coming back refusing to go. LOL There are times when one is out of coat and the wire slicker brushes hurt them no matter how gentle you are so I don't use them on them. What brushes are you using? Certain brushes work better then others in areas. I like to use the shedding comb but you have to take your time till you get tangles out and then I use a slicker and bristle brush. High shedding I'll use the furminator. I also like to hose them down, towel dry to get rid of debri or dirt which will loosen the undercoat for easier grooming. At the end I like to blow the coat out..this gets rid of all loose hairs and dander.
That's a good idea....I should've thought to treat her in the middle of it. I try and do that when I clip her nails but man...she fusses more about that than anything and it's only getting worse. She wasn't even injured at all in any of her clippings, she just doesn't like to be held for any reason unless she's tired.
Alot of times I do it while I watch TV...I lay them between my legs and use the grooming for a relaxation and massaging kinda way. Light touches w/rewards inbetween and smooth slow strokes. They die for this type of grooming and fall asleep. Grooming should be one of the dogs top fav's. Its an awesome way to bond and connect, earn trust, rewarding, and to get to know your dog mentally and physically.
Grissom will let me bruch him for as long as I am willing to, but the second the nail clippers come out, forget it. He's gone.
He's never been "quicked" before, and he has clear nails so I know I'm not coming at all close to it but he will not stand it. He turns into a raging bull. Seriously.
I have a Shepherd that's terrible with his nails and it's such a pain in the butt, so when I got Grissom I thought "I'm gonna do this right, and we're gonna get him used to it as a puppy, teach him to give me his paw, even."
Everything went well for the first two months, he didn't seem phased at all. Then one day he was in the room when I was doing champ's nails, watched him wig out.... and that was is. He was never cool and collected about it again. I know it doesn't hurt him because I'm not quicking it. He never cries when I actually clip, always before. He's SO dramatic.
I thought it might be the "restraining him" part that he didn't like, so I tried just distracting him with food and doing it that way and it definately didn't work.
He's the most easygoing little guy, turns into liquid in my lap, lets me poke, prod, do whatever I want other than clip his nails. I can mess with his feet all i want as long as no clippers are involved. He doesn't get mean, he just yelps, wiggles, fights, screams (yes, scream) and struggles like I'm killing the poor little guy!
Some of them just don't like to be held still. Mine doesn't. Jack will start grumbling if I groom him too long. When he was a puppy he would scream if you tried to hold him still for nails or ears or anything. He is, as Bev mentions, a Drama King.

Try just keeping it short at first. Reward her if she's good after a minute or two and stop there, then go back the next day and pick up where you left off.

When you get to the area she doesn't like, just say "ah-ah!" when she cries, and if you can get her to be quiet for just one brush stroke, stop there that day and reward. Gradually work up to longer times and she should learn to be happy when she sees the brush coming because she knows good things happen. If you think she really is uncomfortable, try a soft grooming glove. Some dogs also like the rubber curry combs they sell for horses I say "comb" but a "curry comb" is actually a flat oval rubber grooming tool with very dull, soft teeth. It's not a comb at all. It looks like this:

Don't buy the ones in the dog department, as they kinda suck. Go to the horse section of a big pet store, or if yours lacks a horse section, try ordering one online or stopping at a tack store.

Our new girl will roll over and sigh while you brush her; she's a snuggler and enjoys the attention.
It doesn't matter what kind of brush I use, my Ella hates them all..... I have to leash her or hang on to her to get her brushed. I try and get her brushed at least some every week to keep the shedding down, and she still isn't "used" to it. She won't make noises, but will just try and hide under the table or bed. And she will give me that "why me" corgi look the whole time. I have a soft brush, the a furminator look alike, and a rake looking brush and try to be gentle too - no luck. I would just keep brushing like you have been, either she will get used to it or not. Every dog is different, so will like it some won't.
P.S. - Ella actually tried to destroy one brush by chewing it up.
