I have used rice.. about 1/4 c mixed with his food... sometimes i have boiled hambuger and gave our dogs 1/2 rice 1/2 hamburger and none of the dog food at all...you can also mix in plain yogurt 1 tbs. Then as the stool is firming up start adding small amts of the dog food over a week and this way you will gradually get him back on his dog food.
many times what people do is after a bout of this or throwing up they will give a blend of rice and chicken after a break from food I would start with a 1/2 cup mixture and increase slightly the next time if tolerated well.. I would just go back to 1/2 and 1/2 with the pumpkin if he's getting better...it's not good to change too much right now!
i see what you mean.i dont wanna make him sick again. for his breakfast i mixed 1/2 old and 1/2 new food and he didnt have so watery poo. it was firmer but completely
thank you for the info. im going to try getting a can of pumpkin today for him and if i cant then i do have some rice and hamburger to give him
If you can't get the pumkin I ...I would just add the plain rice as Darlene mentions...his system is still touchy and I would keep it as plain(no hamberger) as possible! Once he's better yogurt is very good for dogs also!
thats true. i will just give him some rice, i do have some yogurt but im just scared it will give him more diarrhea? its vanilla flavored tho, is that ok to use?
You should use plain unsweetened, unflavored yogurt (Dannon makes one) and only about a tablespoon or so at a time.
Personally I have always given mine the same as I eat and thats the organic cream on top vanilla. I would stay away from the lite as it many times has alot of artificial sweetners and chemicals in it. I would wait a week and then start with a teaspoon for a few days and work up to a tablespoon 1 time per day. I have used this with all my pups and never had a problem...I think it was too much too fast and that the food was the issue! Puppies are like babies and everything you introduce needs to be done carefully and slowely! I think he'll be fine but I would also wait a week with his dry food as it is and then slowly increase his new food a tablespoon and decrease the old the Tablespoon .
The vanilla certianly won't make him sick, so I wouldn't be worried about feeding for that reason, I just think a lot of us don't like giving our dogs that much sugar. If you look at that sugar content, it is a lot for a human, but for a 20lb dog it's like a big piece of cake!
o wow, i didnt think of that. when i went to the store they didnt have just plain yogurt, i thought that was strange so i got vanilla but next time i will look at other stores for it since sugar is bad for dogs
I hope Teddy is doing better...sounds like you are getting some good ideas though!
thank you:) i hope he does too. i got a lot of wonderful advice. thank you everyone!
