Hi Y'all,

Dusty is about 5 months old, but he is looking a little thin. I was super worried about him getting fat that now I think I am over doing it. Basically, I can feel his ribs which isn't good.

I give him about 2 cups of kibble and 1/4 cups of treats throughout the day. I was wondering how much do you feed your dog?

Missy gets about 3/4 of a cup in the morning and 3/4 for dinner. then she has a few treats through out the day.... she is getting fat though but I think the in-laws sneak her treats when we arent around.
Dusty is a growing boy and he will go through spurts that he looks skinny. I think all of mine looked plenty slender until about 18 months and then were just "normal". My Bella looked skinny till 2 1/2 and now she looks great. Depending on what you feed him he should be just fine. I would worry more if he was overweight at this age. Does he get lots of exercise? There's no correct answer as to how much as each dog food is different. My adults each get 3 handful per day which is roughly 1 1/2 cups but they also get plenty of running . You want to be able to feel their ribs.
Thanks for the reply. That puts me at ease that we want to feel his rips. He gets 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at night and treats throughout. I think I should stick with that. I feel he doesn't get as much exercise as he should. He gets about 30 min walk a day. Then play time throughout the whole day. But I feel that most people walk their dog for about 1.5 hrs. But he is just a puppy, so I don't want to have long walks with him till he is about 1 year old.

Definitely helps! Yea, I feel that I am not exercises Dusty as much as I should. But he does have random bursts of energy where he will run around the house for a few minutes. I do want to take him on long hikes, but I was told I should wait till he is about a year old and fully developed before doing something like that.
You are right about the long walks but shorter more frequent is ok. Also remember he is a pup and so when you are hearing how much dogs eat...puppies require more than adults.
I go by 1% of the body weigh, 2% if Yoda had an really active day!
Mranda and Morgan were getting half a cup of food per meal but people on this site suggested I change it a bit. So now they get 1/3 of a cup 2X a day with carrots. At dinner they are going to have some green beans for the first time, we will see what they think of them.
Finnigan is a year and 5 months and he gets about 1/3 cup twice a day sometimes with some canned pumpkin in his dinner and maybe one or two small treats during the day. He was eating 2 cups a day when he was little but he seemed to be looking a little heavy so we cut it back to 1 cup per day and he still appeared to put on weight so he's now down to 1/3 cup twice a day and it seems to be a good amount for him.
My pup is... four months almost (wow) and he gets 1/3 cup 3x a day. When we move to feeding only twice a day (I'm going to start next week, when he's 16 weeks), I think I'm going to bump him up to 3/4 cup 2x a day.

If you check out my blog, I have a skinny puppy too with some pictures. His ribs are becoming less prevalent and his stature, I think, is perfect. He's weighed in at 6.2 lbs at 12 weeks. So who knows? He's not too much bigger now...
If your corgi is not exercising vigorously for a minimum of 1 hour per day, 1/3-2/3 cup in the morning and 1/3-2/3 cup at night is plenty. Most corgis you see are overweight but it will depend on your own dog. I have 2 corgis who are within 1 year of each other and both weigh 22lbs. I feed 1 girl between 2/3-1 cup of food per day and the other about 1 1/4 cup of the same food and they both stay the same weight. One dog just burns more calories than the other.

Also, regular store bought dog food, regardless of what the label says, is all crap. I would never recommend feeding your dog kibbles n bits, purina, whatever. They use the "4 Ds" to make their food, Dead, Dying, Diseased, or Disabled animals. Study's have shown that humans are living longer while their pets are dying sooner. Long story short, its been traced back to the dog food. Innovo is a good brand of dog food. If you want your dog to live a long healthy life, look into whats really in your dogs food. Its scary but there are no laws against companies buying euthenized animals for animal shelters and "rendering" them into dog/cat food.
Yea, I am very particular about his food. Right now, we are feeding him Taste of the Wild, which has a 6 start rating on Dog Food Analysis. Salmon is the first ingredient in the food, and doesn't have a whole list of weird stuff.
Does your dog have food allergies? Usually the foods that use fish as the main protein are reserved for dogs who are allergic to other proteins.
