Is This Right?
I found a listing for a Cardigan puppy on puppyfind.com and it seems off to me. The first reason is that the father listed is a dog I know who has sired many litters and apparently sired the pups listed on the site but the owner of the mother and pups (according to her own web page) states she is not a puppy mill or breeder. Anyone know who George belongs to now? It seems odd that he would be offered as a stud to breed this litter and the mother is a red none-the-less. Maybe it's just me but I have never seen a blue and red bred before. Is this normal? Do they believe her to be a hidden merle? Are they trying to produce red merles? I mean, the "breeder" sounds fine and has a puppy contract and all that but something about it doesn't make sense to me. Well, I could be wrong, but I don't remember red being an acceptable color to breed with a blue merle and for someone who claims they are not even a breeder to get a well known dog like George to sire a litter seems strange. I wasn't looking to purchase a puppy or anything, I just like to go on there occasionally for kicks and this one caught my attention.

Trouble? But what would they say to someone that called and asked these questions? If they are going to advertise they must be willing to supply answers, don't you think?
Unless I am confusing George with another dog, I thought he was being retired.

It's not right. You are correct, red is not an acceptable color to be bred to merle under the CWCCA code of ethics. If you're a member, you do sign it -- and there's controversy over it still. It's an interesting discussion between most Cardi folks for a lot of reasons. (Fun over dinner, haha!)
Section 2. Failure to comply with the following may be considered to be action(s) not in the best interests of the Club or Breed:
b) Blue Merles may be bred to blacks (with or without red or brindle points) only.
(Accidental litters have happened, but the resulting pups are normally sold on pet contracts/limited registration.)
Joanna is right, I know the situation too. It's a very sticky one and really one I don't feel like talking about here in public for the same reasons she does. If you want to honestly know, I'm happy to take it off board and to private between us, mostly because I have one of George's sons, and want to make sure that the previous breeder is not put into a poor category because of this - because she's a lovely breeder with grand dogs. It's just an uncomfortable situation, all around.

Yes, I've read a few debates regarding color breeding and such a topic can become rather heated.
George's sire Kodak is from a blue to blue breeding which is not only unacceptable but can create health problems for the pups. Kodak has had a lo of success. Anyone know how his litter came about and what repercussions that had if any?

One of the things that makes the color rules controversial is that they have changed so often. Kodak was born when merle-to-merle breedings were allowed under the COE, so there were no repercussions. I don't know if he had any double-merle siblings but Kodak himself can see and hear.
