We're very sad today to say goodbye to Old Dog, Monty

Many times on this site when talking about little Corgi Lilliput I have mentioned Old Dog. He is actually a fifteen year old Springer Spaniel named Monty, the best, lovingest dog we have ever had. Truly made of velcro. Mr. Diplomacy.

Monty has been on a slow decline, and we have now realized that his time has come. So tomorrow we will say goodbye to our old companion and best friend, Monty. Fifteen years ago he came to us when my grown children were all little boys. They are all now grown men. For fifteen years Monty has been our lovey pup, our snuggler. All the children who came thru this family first were enamored of the more exciting dogs, but soon came around to preferring Monty, who would cuddle them and listen to their problems.

Lilliput has been Alpha around here since the day she walked in. I'm not sure how much she will miss Monty, but I suspect that she will to some extent. She's never been alone. I've never been alone, either. We're all going to miss our Monty boy.

Julia, I'm sorry that the time has come to say good bye to your beloved Old Dog. Letting our friends go, letting them have a dignified end, is our last and maybe truest sign of unselfish friendship. I'm glad that you have Lilliput there to comfort one another.
So sorry for your loss. Monty sounds like he was much loved and a great guy.
I am sorry for what you are going through and understand how hard this is. Thank you for being so unselfish and realizing that his quality of life is not going to get better and helping him by being with him till the end! I think that is the final "love" we can show our animals!
Oh, I am so sorry to hear this. We had a Springer Spaniel when I was growing up, and she was the sweetest most sensitive dog I ever had the pleasure to be around, and is in a tie with Jack as to which dog was the smartest I've met.

Monty was very lucky to have you, and you were lucky to have him.
So sorry to hear this. We had a beloved Brittany whom we had to make the same decision about earlier this year. Like you, my children could hardly remember a time before her, and it was very difficult, especially for the youngest who treated her like a sibling. My heart goes out to you and your family.
It's never easy to come to that decision. But it is truly unconditional love. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
This is sad news and I am truly sorry to hear it. Old dogs are the best dogs, and you have made the one decision you have left for him. You are doing the right thing and recognizing that it is time. I had to do it myself earlier this year, and I do not regret it. Monty will be missed - you and he are in my thoughts and prayers.
i am so sorry to hear this:( its never easy saying good bye, u will be in my prayers, he sounds like such a wonderful little guy

That is an amazing picture......so perfect!
We are so sorry for your loss. We lost out Rudy in July and even now she is often in our thoughts. Here is a poem I wrote about her that your comment about Monty being the "Best, lovingest dog . . ." made me think of, again, today. Corgis are spectacular by nature but others are simply the best forever.

The Best Dog We Ever Had

She was as odd looking as a dog could be
Long, white, short legged with funny ears
Not enough Bassett, not enough Lab
To make claim to any elegance or beauty.
She had her quirks
Fear of men and hiding under tables
She was smart, that day at the pound,
When she raised her paw to shake hello
And melted out hearts
As if she didn’t know.
She raised our puppy even when she was new;
Ever devoted, always true.
When times were dark
She guarded us
Always watching with her sad dark eyes
Not just mine or his but the one thing truly ours.
And even when we couldn’t find a kind word for the world
We agreed on one thing without dispute
She was the best dog we ever had
Age took her unexpectedly
One moment running free
The next paralyzed and confused
But always faithful, ever true.
I thanked God she didn’t seem to know
That everything would change that summer’s day
When she lay by the screen door,
No longer wanting to go out to play.
We held back our tears so she wouldn’t fret
Knowing she only cared about our thoughts
Having never a care for her own.
She was always a surprise to us
So much more than a dog should be
The best dog we ever had; Rudy. July 20, 2010

Rest in Peace, Monty; we know you are waiting There . . .
Fifteen years is a wonderfully long life and it sounds like Monty's was filled with much love. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
