Help! woorid about Katie
Hi my Katie and I jsut got back from the dog park, and I am worried sick! She was the only dog there that wouldnt play or run. I walked her down to the lake (only to find labs and retrievers) and back which was about a 1/4 mi walk and she was beat.
She wouldnt let any other dog get near her hip area. she would snap at them. She does have a waddle when she walks, has had it since she was a baby, only lately its been a much wider waddle. I have noticed last couple of months, she has missed her step a few times, and has tripped, or jsut then decided to sit in the same place she missed that step.
I thought it was because of lack of excercise but lately I have been taking her on walks. At 1st, it was only around the block, and then 2 blocks, ect. only when the weather is cool enough, she hates the heat.
I keep her nails nice and trim, cause I thought it might be that, but it isnt.
I've read some of the posts about hip displaysia, and all who owned dogs with it talked about a popping sound, and I dont hear anything.
She does sway her rear area when standing, like she is unsteady. she still wants to jump on the couch but I put a stop to her jumping down, I carry her down, every since a woman at work had her min pin almost paralyzed jumping off the bed..
Last winter she did have an incident where she jumped off the couch and was acting hurt for about 5 mins, but then she seemed ok.
She has always swayed in her step or stance, even as a puppy, I thought that was normal because of having such a long body. Her front legs are very strong and even when she stands, but her back legs do sway and seem unsteady.
Katie is the runt of the little, she is much smaller than other corgis, and boy did I see that today and the corgi meetup!
Anyone else with a similar problem? any help on Corgi health issues with symtomps like this?
I hear hip displaysia just gets worse over the years, and I want Katie to live a long and healthy, and happy life. she seems bothered by this and sleeps most of the day in my room on her pillow.

Get an appointment with the vet for a check up and x-rays. You will just worry til you do. Better to find out what is going on than to wonder and worry. Hip displaysia is not a death sentence. My son's lab is 10 years old, has one terrible hip and one hip that was replaced when she was about a year. She plays and wrestles with the 2 year old Westie who lives next door to them. Get to the vet and get some answers.

I know I'm calling tomorrow, maybe its arthritis?
I thought I might be able to get some insight, maybe my post will catch someones attention that had the same problem?

Corgis are prone to spinal issues because of their long backs; good for you to not let her jump down. She may have arthritis. Check with your vet. Some dogs with arthritis "knuckle under" or drag their paws so that the front edge of their nails drags and wears; check her paws for wear on the top of her nails. Be sure to talk with your vet about any treatments; dogs can have water exercise, acupuncture, chiropractic, traditional and alternative medicines and supplements to treat arthritis IF that is what it is. Only a vet can diagnose for sure. We had good luck with acupuncture for the arthritis pain with our first dog. Good luck!

Hi Thanks for your help Chris, I've just come home from the vet, and he suspects its DM unfortuneatly. Said its definately nero [roblem going on, took full xrays. He has to do some research on the disease, and get back to me with a treatment plan. She was clear on the xrays. no arthritis no injuries, no hip displaysia. He said he brain is not communicating with her back legs, a little more on the right.
So if anyone knows of treatments that worked for them? I really want Katie to live as happy a life as possible. and as long as possible, and maybe I've caught it soon enough that I can. I'm in tears as I'm typing.\
I did post on the corgi health and issues forum hoping to get some help.

Oh Pat my heart goes out to you!! So sorry for the diagnosis but I hope she has many happy years left. Sometimes they do better with the limitations than we do.

How old is she? DM usually doesn't show until a dog is older. Google it and check it out.

I am sorry to hear that. In Corgis, though, DM is typically a disease of old age, not of youth. Would you be able to get a second opinion?

I don't blame your vet for thinking DM, because in an older Pem I'd be thinking that too, but it is VERY unusual for a dog of any breed to have DM symptoms at two years old (and have started it as a puppy) and it would be super strange for a Pem to have it. The average age of diagnosis in Pems is 11-12.
If she's always done it, two things to look for are transitional vertebrae and wobbler syndrome and other narrowing of the spinal column. You may have to escalate beyond your normal vet to a neuro specialist if your vet is stumped (which would not be unusual and would not mean he's not a good vet - no vet can be an expert in everything).
