Ok, there are a lot of very smart folks on this site, can anyone tell me why a corgi blows his coat in December! The temperatures are cold and there is snow on the ground and Sparty has hair falling out all over. If I did not brush him often he would look like a blue merle Pembroke!!

My guess is you can only shrug with genetics. Perhaps it is harmonal, like females ovulating. Harmones are released that cause them toshed their coat. In which case, it is bio chemical and not something controllable, though it can be influenced slightly by things like stress, diet, and exercize level, all of which effect the bodies clockwork mechanism (for lack of a better term). In other words, it cannot be avoided, but it can be made a lot easier on the dog as long as she is healthy and not suffering any issues like dry skin, brittle coat, etc.
Or perhaps it is the shedding of the old worn coat just before the cold really sets in, to make way for a nicer, newer coat.... new fashion statement if you will. Your guess is as good as mine. With me, I have given up guessing things for the most part with my dogs. I just smile and nod, like a good butler. LOL
Is he blowing undercoat, or just top coat?
I can't tell you why, but I can tell you Lyla is doing it to! Time to bust out the Furminator!!
I've never noticed it being much about the weather. Maybe if they lived outside and didn't have artificial light (ever) it would adjust to the seasons, but most of them just blow coat a few times a year regardless of month. In the unspayed girls it's hormonal (generally about 3 months after a heat cycle), which is why my Bronte is dropping coat like nuts right now.
Bev, did you happen to add any full-spectrum lighting (say, for plants or winter mood improvement)?

Personally my experience with dogs is that they shed heavily in the spring/early summer (intact females excepted) and regular indoor lighting doesn't seem to trick most of them into forgetting the season, as far as their coats are concerned. But if you have full-spectrum lighting that could conceivably do it.
Hi Beth, No we did not change anything and sunshine is hard to come by this time of year in the center of Michigan! I guess it is just Sparty's time to shed. Not real helpful since the Grandbabies will be here next week crawling around on the floor. We are furminating much to Sparty's dismay. It amazes me how motley his Tri coat is when he is shedding. Usually people complement me on his healthy shine but when he is shedding it looks pretty ragged. I guess I am just whining! Thanks everyone.
How is his health? When Rocky starts one of his episodes with fever, he sheds like crazy. If he hasn't been to the vet recently, maybe a visit is in order.
Kalvin is shedding EVERYWHERE also!!!! I have to keep like five emergancy lint brushes with me, and it seems to be getting worse as the days of the seasons come. But I just recently bought a Furbuster from walmart for only 20 bucks! And it seems to be the best $20 i spent in my life! This brush looks dangerous but Kalvin really seems to enjoy it, and it is said that stops shedding by 80% which is better than nothing for me! And also maybe if you change his food diet with food that has more vitamins in it. I just put Kalvin on a food called "Blue Buffalo" and the lady that i bought it from not only told me it is good for their diet but also their hair. I didnt believe her at the moment, but I really truely saw an improvement in not only the quiality of his coat but it also seemed as if he didnt shed as much!
Bev, my Livvy just got done shedding and I think she may be starting to get her coat, she was just in season. My Aussie looks like half the dog he usually is too! So I don't know why but I have the same thing.
Ha ha, I am their butler!!
Do you think Santa will bring me a new vacuum? I really need one as mine is is not working...great time with 2 dogs shedding!
Oh, this is a bad time for a vacuum stop working! I would prefer some one to do the vacuuming as a gift than the actual vacuum!
