so as most most of you know i have moved to Arkansas and i really like it here so far. i have made some new friends(one i meet on this site) and we have a cute little home and a very nice backyard. problem is i cant even go back there because my neighbor have 5 dogs..4westies and 1poodle. they are not friendly what so ever and just to avoid hearing the barking and see them trying to jump the fence after teddy i just dont go back there unless i have too.

well the other day we had a comcast dude come over to set up tv and internet. the poor guy walks out and all the dogs attacked him. they injured him badly and had to go to the hospital. all the lady did was pick her dogs up and went inside and that was it. in order to get the dogs off of him he had to kick and stomp them...it all happened so fast.

i am now honestly scared as i was just about to take teddy out to go potty. what would have happened if they attacked me or teddy?? i would defend him at all costs of course and i honestly can say she would be paying for everything and lose her dogs.

the comcast dude called animal control and they came to get the dogs but the lady wouldnt let them in so they just left! i talked to them and they said this has happened before. why dont they just seize all of the dogs!? it seems like everyone's safety is at risk. it isnt fair that i cant even walk out into my backyard with out them trying to kill us.

im just not really sure what to do as i love our home but living like this isnt right

I would get some pepper spray for when you go out. Also call Animal Control and state your concerns and ask if more will be done after this last incidence. It is possible if Comcast files a complaint that more will be done. Good luck, I feel really bad for you and be safe.
thank you Jane i appreciate it. i didnt know if i could call animal control and discuss the situation or not. i just really wish they would take these dogs
I would contact animal control myself about the situation.  That would seriously make me mad.  Is there a spray that you could get to spray the dogs with if they get too close? Not sure!  Could you put up a privacy fence between the properties for protection?  I know the expense would be a bummer but if it would mean they could not get a ya'll then it would be worth it.  Just throwing out ideas!  Good luck.
we do have a fenced in yard but its chain link :( we have some bushes that cover it a little but they can still see us. i didnt think of a spray to use. i just hope that if i ever have to use it that she dosnt file charges on me for using it
Is your yard fenced? Sorry I'm just confused as you said they tried to jump the fence to get Teddy...did they get through somehow to attack the cable guy?
its ok i should have explained it better. yes our yard is fenced in but these dogs are relentless, they try so hard to clime it to get to us. when the got to the cable guy they did actually manage to jump it

Unfortunately, you have moved to a state that does not seem to have a specific bite law.  From the (admittedly brief) search I did on dog bites in Arkansas, it looks like your neighbor can be held liable if she is sued, but there's no information on whether the animals will be taken away or if she'll just be slapped with a fine.

Definitely call Animal Control and ask them what can be done in a situation like this.  Hopefully the Comcast employee will file a complaint and more will be done there.  If it looks like things aren't going anywhere, you may want to consider a better fence for your yard (or at least the part that border's your neighbor's property).

If you can not get animal control to do anything, I would go and buy an electric fence charger (you can get a solar powered one) and run one strand of wire just over the top of the fence so if they try to climb or jump the fence they will get a shock. It is very inexpensive and make sure you post that it is electric to cover yourself. It will stop the problem!! As far as using pepper spray she can not file charges against you if the dogs are on your property and they are dangerous. In Indiana you can legally shoot someones dog for being on your property so I sure you would be fine using pepper spray if you choose to.

Hi Rebecca,

So sorry to hear what you're going through, here's my advise:

Regardless of what happens, do your part and be nice to your neighbour. We've had member's corgi poisoned by their neighbour twice, it was in the newspaper and on TV.

Get to know your local politician and make an appointment, talk to them in person or their representatives. Always present a problem with a solution. Try and take emotions out of the situation, present facts and state how you would like the situation resolve. Respect will go a long way.

Contact your local TV  / radio / newspaper , call their mainline and talk to a reporter, let them know you've already spoken with local poitician / mayor...etc. Keep the conversation short and to the point. No one likes a chronic whiner / complainer, be reasonable and prepare for a compromise, politics is about negotiation.

Contact your police station / animal control, be polite / calm, ask them for their expertise, ask how they can help the situation, remind yourself what you're trying to accomplish, stick with the plan. Put yourself in their shoe, what kind of person would you go the extra mile for, be that person.

If you don't feel comfortable in your own backyard, stay out of that area until the situation is resolve. Your dog knows when you're nervous, he will feed on your vibe and act accordingly. Unless you have a plan on how to deal with 6 dogs by yourself, do not go there. Check your yard daily, report any suspicious meat / food. Don't keep a water dish in the yard.

Don't buy pepper spray unless you know how to use one and ready to use one. Practice how to use one and know exactly the distance / wind direction, or else it will hurt you more than the dogs. Remember if you do discharge one, your goal is to get away from the situation, don't stay and linger.

I personally prefer an air horn, you can use repeatedly and attract attention to yourself.

If you do insist on purchasing pepper spray, get Bear mace, my college roommate accidentally discharged one at the university cafeteria, the place was evacuated for hours.

Have a plan, know what you want, what you're willing to compromise, stay calm and be polite. Good PR is the key. Good luck!

thank you Sam for all your info, if that is what i have to do then i will go do that as this isnt fair for not only me but teddy. all he wants to do is walk around his new backyard but as soon as we see the dogs we have to get out of there. i will be sure to be as polite as i possibly can and i really hope we can resolve this. i have checked the outside of the fence i have never seen anything but i never let him out there without supervision as corgis are rare in this area and since hes a cute dog someone might take him.

i will use a horn or the pepper spray, as long as either one works. i have never used pepper spray so i will be sure to practice if i decide on that one

Is it technically your fence or the neighbors? If it's the neighbors I'm not sure there's much you can do besides call and report every single incident. If it's your fence, could you put some kind of fabric covering across it so they can't see into your yard? I'm not sure how much it would help as I'm sure they could still hear you, but at least they wouldn't be able to see in. I think they make "toppers" for fences to make them taller as well, but I'm not sure if that would work on a chain link. If nothing else can be done the electric fence wire isn't a bad idea either...
i am honestly not sure if its ours or hers as we both use the one side of it, not sure if that makes sense. both our back yards are fenced in but the side that the dogs run up to is what we both share. i have thought of buying a tall privacy fence just so they couldnt see us but it would look pretty goofy with just one side with privacy fencing on it as that can get pretty expensive.
