How can you tell when your female corgi puppy is peeing/about to pee?

I just brought "Mollie" home today at 8 weeks old. She's a really sweet girl and so far relatively well behaved. I just had a question about how can I tell when she is about to pee:

So far I've been taking her outside every 2 hours or less, but sometimes she goes potty, sometimes she doesn't. The times that she doesn't go I begin wondering how she can hold her bladder for that long, but then realize much later, when I discover a tiny wet spot, that she has actually peed a little bit in her indoor exercise pen where I'm keeping her.

I've been keeping an eye on her all day - and my biggest problem is I can't tell when she is about to pee or IS currently in the act of peeing. She is so short that when she "squats" to pee it just looks the same as she's sitting down for a second. And she doesn't really do the sniffing around in circles thing. I've been trying to catch her in the act so I can "punish" her and take her outside, but somehow I always miss the opportunity!

Any suggestions? Thank you! :)

PS: Pooping, on the other hand, is very obvious :)

I just brought my own pup home (also female) on Friday.  She's 10 weeks old and, I agree, it was hard to spot at first.  To me it looks like she stretches for a moment rather than sits.  She stops and stretches her body out, almost like she's about to lie down with her feet out behind her, then holds the pose for a few seconds while she goes.

I'm sure each dog does their business in a slightly different way, so yours might have a different pose.  Do you take her out after play, naps and feedings?  You could try taking her to potty on a patch of dirt or very short grass, too, so you can see when she goes outside.

I hope by "punish" you mean a sharp "no" and then right outside. She is a baby remember and needs to be shown what/where is OK. Take her out every hour. If she doesn't go, put her in her crate for a bit and try outside again. She will get it. No playing outside, just potty.

Hi Ann, it's in the FAQ.
the best is to have certain times along with other  times...after waking up is an immediate must, after eating right away for now but as she gets older you will be wanting to back up(waiting 10-20 min. longer) as she will be keeping her food in her system longer. Potty her before feeding also. Every 2 hours right now with lots of praises and the word potty when she goes outside:)
It was impossible to tell with Henry when he was a puppy too. I would try to get her on a schedule, potty time right after getting up, shortly after eating, after naps, after playing, etc. I'd also take her out every hour or so.
I feel your pain. LOL. munchkin came to us @ 4 months and was "litterbox" trained, but that made no difference once she adjusted to her new house!!! So I began to watch and wait and still missed the moment!! All I can tell you is that you will notice her signs as she gets older.  Or she will let you know. It's just a minor inconvenience when you are own by one of the greatest breeds in the world.  Pooping was hysterical to me, Munchkin's butt seems to get higher!! It's just so darn cute to see. LOL Much love and success with Mollie.

Haha, I remember having the same problem when Jack was a puppy.   The legs are so short you can't always tell.  Anyway, he was a VERY busy puppy who was moving if he was awake, so I pretty much figured out that if he paused his forward momentum, he was probably peeing.

He was around 5 months old before he was at all reliable because he was too busy playing to want to stop what he was doing to go outside, so he'd just pee on the run.  No sniffing, no circling, no anxious looks.  NOTHING!  Just running puppy, three-second-pause-to-pee-puppy, running puppy again.   Very funny actually, like the little kid who can't get potty-trained because he's like a perpetual motion machine.

I would just take toady out immediatly after waking up and before going to bed. then like 5-10 mins after he ate. I also took him out every hour or two to get him used to using the grass and training him quicker. it worked, then they get used to being outside.

I couldnt really tell until i saw him crouch a tiny bit, but i had to watch carefully.

I didn't know for sure with Emmy at first either, but she will put her back legs out to the side and squat down a little.
I was puzzled with Annie, too, for the first day, she is just so low to the ground already. She kind of pops both hind legs out to the side Sometimes she holds 1 up if she is peeing downhill & doesn't want to pee on herself! Annie is very reliable in that any change in activity level means she's got to go. I'm using an expen in the backyard so she can walk around a little but stay focused. Good luck!

It's tough to notice at first but the longer you have her the better you'll be able to spot it. When she's about to pee her back end will squat a little bit.

If you see her licking her private part, that means she wants to pee, especially if she is does that and then starts sniffing the floor a lot. That's means she is looking for a place to pee. About 20 min. about your puppy drinks and eats, she will probably need to go potty. We always take Kiki out before we go to sleep too.
