Chipped Tooth

Franklin, being the graceful dog that he is, managed to smash his face into the side of the levee a few days ago because he stumbled at take off when trying to jump up on top of it. At the time I didn't see any bleeding or anything so we went on our way. Well today I took a much closer look and it appears he chipped a bottom incisor (the little tooth in front of the canine) and there may be a small crack in the incisor above it. I'm currently in an animal dentistry class, and I know the teacher/vet would say the tooth needs to be x-rayed and possibly extracted, but wondering if anyone has dealt with a chipped tooth where the vet opted to leave it in? It doesn't seem to be bothering Frank at all, he still nibbles and tears up his toys with his front teeth, and he has such a hard time with anesthetic that I just don't want to put him through it if its not necessary. Also, I don't want him to look like a redneck with two missing front teeth! Lol! Any suggestions or advice?

We had a Weimeraner mix that broke off a tooth further back in his mouth and never had a problem with it. Why/why not I don't know.

My boyfriend had a ferret that had a chipped tooth.  We never did anything about it because it didn't chip down to the soft part of the tooth.  It was only superficial.  I guess if the chip only affects the enamel, it's no big deal.

Both my Sparty and Misty have chipped teeth from vigorous chewing and they are fine. However, we did have to have Sparty's cracked tooth removed and ban Nylabones from our house. Hope Franklin is OK.

We had to ban Nylabones too!  Yup.  My girl's teeth are chipped here and there...

When we got Jackson, the first thing we did was had his teeth cleaned.  The vet ended up pulling two, and he has a third one on top that he opted to keep in for now as it was a "very important tooth"...but he said it's cracked and bad.  You'd never know it though, he doesn't act like it bothers him at all.  We also had a springer spaniel/golden retriever mix that had some cracked teeth from playing ball so much, but she never acted like it bothered her either.

My 3 year old has one missing tooth on the bottom front  and has chipped the tips off his lower canines. All this from chasing a big hard plastic ball (he destroys all soccor balls by nipping them). he was just at the vet for his annual wellness exam and no problems with the teeth were identified at all. He does look pretty "trailer park" with  that missing lower tooth but there are no problems from it.  He still gets rawhides to chew.

He seems to be doing ok. Thanks for asking. I didn't take him in to the vet to have it looked at as I'm not sure I'm ready for the answer yet lol. It isn't bothering him and he was chewing the meat off a knuckle bone with his front teeth the other day so I think it isn't causing him pain. If the tooth starts to discolor or seems to cause him any pain I think we will head to the vet to have it looked at. Hope Lance and Tucker are doing ok after the ice incident!

Aww I hope you have found a solution to this! Brody chipped one of his baby fangs. All four of his baby fangs were still in when his adult fangs came in. 3 out of the 4 came out naturally, the fourth had chipped and had to be extracted. Brody seems to be fine with anesthesia though.

Thanks. My chihuahua actually had to have 2 of her baby canines and all of her back baby molars removed because none of them came out on their own. Of course she had already been spayed by that point and I'm not really sure why the vet didn't remove them at the same time so she had to have a 2nd anesthetic! Poor little girl. Franklin does not do well under anesthetic, he has a low heart rate to begin with and problems controlling his body heat so when he goes under his heart just about stops and they always  have to give emergency drugs, and then his temp drops so low it takes me almost a full day to get it back up again. He also vocalizes quite a bit for the next day or two from the pre-med they give. So I'm trying to avoid it as much as I can. He has developed a head shake so when I take him in to the vet to check his ears I'll have him check his tooth too.

Aww poor thing! I would want to avoid that as well. I wonder if the head shake is from a tooth irritation? Or does he still seem pretty unfazed by it still?

nah its his ear. He will hold his ear at a funny angle and sometimes scratch it. Its weird bc its only at night or in the morning after he's been laying down for a while. Got some ear wash and going to see if that helps. He swims everyday so wouldn't be surprised if he has some sand and infection going on in there. The wash is supposed to get rid of debris and dry out the ear canal so hopefully that'll help!
