i was wondering if any of you clean your dogs teeth at home? beyond just brushing but by using scrapers, flies, and teeth polishers? badens teeth are very important to me and i try to keep up with the brushing but none the less, he still gets tarter. he gets a dental chew everyday to try and help also.
i was about to sign up for Banfields wellness plan which for $40 a month covers dental and anything else i need, the reason i was going to go that route is because here in CA the cheapest teeth cleaning i have been able to find is $400. thats just way too much too me to throw down all at once.
if u have an recommendations i would appreciate it. Baden trusts me 100% and when i do brush his teeth he lays on his side and pretty much falls asleep while i scrub his teeth
UPDATE:
i decided to get Banfields wellness plan and it was very worth the $40 a month! it covered his teeth cleaning, urine test, blood panel test, heart worm test, dewormer, stool sample, and office visit. his teeth are now tarter free and is doing well here at home resting. hes pretty cuddly when hes tired. i could get used to this ;) lol

Sounds like you are doing a great job with oral hygiene! I have had my adopted adult dog for over a year and she still acts as if she is being molested when I try to brush her teeth and cut her nails. I am not sure how often a full cleaning should be done, but I am sure there are some answers online. I am sure age makes a difference too. If 40. covers EVERYTHING it sounds like a great bargain, but if it only covers dental it seems pricey to me. Just my opinion.
the 40 does cover everything too :) like shots, dental, exams, blood work, etc. i think its a great bargain too
If you plan on using a scraper or scaling tool, I recommend reading a lot of information about it. I thought about doing the same, honestly, and found that if you scrape their teeth then you run a bit of a risk for making their problems worse. As I understand it, if you scrape the enamel and accidentally create grooves then you increase their chances of developing tooth problems because the plaque can build up in the grooves. It's no impossible to use the tool without causing damage, just be sure you learn as much as you can first before you take that step.
What works for me is just brushing the dogs' teeth every night (or every other night) before bed. Yuki has just turned 6 years old and has never had a single cleaning at the veterinarian's office. :) I even turned his dental issues around at one point, before I started the frequent cleaning. He was considered Grade 1 and in need of a cleaning, but I gave him a couple of months on the new routine and his teeth cleared up nicely. No more yucky black build-up!
i am very glad u said that because i didnt think of that. i dont want to cause further harm by scrapping his teeth just to get more tarter build up so i think ill leave it to the professionals.
i brush his teeth every day (or other day) but he has this calcium deposit that collected tarter and brushing alone wont get rid of it :( and its starting to bother me because i dont want it to get worse
what kind of toothpaste do u use?
I usually use either Nylabone brand or Petrodex, whichever one happens to be in stock at our local pet store. They seem to like both varieties equally and I haven't noticed one working better or worse than the other.
if it works then i have no problem with the price :) im glad your pets like it because i have bought other brands and they will not drink from the bowl. thank you for the suggestion :)
