just a friendly reminder!
just as a reminder to those since we all care very much about are dogs. be sure that their collar or harness is snug! a few months ( really have been meaning to post this) back while getting baden out of the car baden slipped his collar and ran into a busy street. i was trying to get his ball out of the car and thats when i felt a small pull and he was off running towards something he had seen. this street was very busy, lots of cars and a bus dropping off children. when i seen he ran out i called to him as a car from one way was doing 25 mph and the other going a bit faster as she was on the phone. baden realized what he was doing and stopped right in the middle of the lanes and then the left side where the faster car was driving. i called out to him and hunkered down obviously very scarred. i ran between the cars and scooped baden up since he was paralyzed with fear and wouldnt budge while hearing the people honking to me and people slamming on their brakes.
my heart stopped seeing a flash of what could happen go through my mind. to loose another dog due to a careless mistake on my part before he hit his 3rd birthday.
happy to say Baden turned 3 in November due to my quick reaction. i will admit i cried and cried shortly after and us totally shaken but please take extra caution. since that day i always use a snug harness or a martingale collar. or if u do not have a martingale collar you can attach the clip to a slip collar along with his regular collar as a back up so if he tried to slip his collar the slip collar will act as a back up and tighten so he will be safe from harm. even if u are against slip collars this is an effective method from them slipping their collar.

You are so right...even my dogs that have a perfect recall get Martingales on when we travel. When I used to raise pups all of them went home with martingales as well as any rescue...they are the best!!!!!!!! It's a great reminder as things can happen so fast!

exactly! u never know what could happen. i will say baden has a perfect 100% recall but in that moment he panicked seeing all the cars and didnt know what to do. we were both scared. now that he has a martingale collar i dont have to worry. NO MORE BUCKLE COLLARS for this family

I switched to martingales a year or two ago after reading a lot of Jane's comments about them and I would never go back to the standard buckle collars I used to use! Yuki & Ellie seem to like them more, as they're very loose when off of a leash, and I'm happy knowing that they can't slip the collars when we're out for a walk. A very scary experience for you, Rebecca, but I'm glad to see that the worst didn't happen!

Agreed! Martingales for life! Shippo has backed out of regular collars before. He has a couple martingales now, but mainly I use the one I made for him:

o my i really love that collar! i didnt know u made collars. i am always looking for unique ones for baden. its a hobby of mine i guess lol do u have any in yellow, red, and blue? i see one stripped some time ago and fell in love with it and knew baden would look great in it

How do you figure the size for a dog the size of a corgi?
Years ago the greyhound folks introduced me to these things. They are WONDERFUL. After seeing how excellent it was for the grey I bought one for the German shepherd -- perfect, even for a pretty furry dog. When Cassie came to live with me, I bought one resembling the "Country Brook" design (http://amzn.to/1C4FPCt) from a maker I found online (for a LOT more than Amazon is charging!!), but even though I followed their instructions, it just seemed too big and clunky for her. Now I'm using the Petco type that's just a piece of webbing with a chain. Not very pretty but it does the job fine.
These things are an excellent investment. Cassie quickly demonstrated that she could slip just about any traditional-style collar, and the other day -- get this! -- she actually managed to wriggle out of her harness! The martingale slips tight when pressure is put on it -- sort of like a chain collar but since its fabric it's not so cruel. BUT it's not a good idea to use them with a retractable leash. If the dog shoots off after a cat it can jerk itself up before you can drop the handle, and if that happens it could do very serious damage to the dog's neck and trachea. Use a regular leather or nylon lead instead.

i am going to say i just went off on how a standard buckle would fit and add some slack since it will tighten if they try out wiggle out of it but since most are adjustable i wouldnt worry too much :) i know what u mean about petcos collars. just not a huge selection. i got mine from themoddog.com on etsy both the green and blue one

I hate to say this but I had no idea what a Martingale collar was even tho I've had dogs all my life. I just googled them to see...well, what do you know, that's the kind I've always used on my dogs...duh. I guess I just never heard them called by that name. Even tho Max has to have a harness to be walked because of his neck problems both dogs wear their collars all the time, their tags are attached to the collar.

I only use the martingale for walking. I don't leave it on all the time as I worry about them getting caught on something and not being able to get loose. This would be when slipping out of the collar is a good thing. Rosie slipped out of her regular collar about 4 years ago when we were taking our last potty walk at a vacation rental. She got frightened when a very large loose dog bolted out of his garage in the dark as we approached his driveway. She was a block away before I could call her name. Fortunately the dog's owner was outside and got his dog under control. I called Rosie and she did come back right away. Rocky would have decided to go exploring. There were no cars but that was pure luck. It was dark and she was loose in a strange place with no collar on. They are microchipped but short and hard to see on a dark street. I got martingales for both of them and they stay attached to their leashes. It's very easy to slip them on before the walk and take them off after. I don't have to worry about them slipping their collars, which stay on all the time, or getting caught on something or each other's teeth with the martingale. We go to GA every winter and when we travel it is especially important that they don't get loose away from home.

Corgis seem especially adept at slipping collars so that's what I use also. The other thing I always teach my dogs is to not get out of a car or out an outside door without an "OK" from me.
