Chewing his bed
Hi everyone,
Well Potus had developed a new habit- chewing his bed. They're like large floor pillows and he's had one as his bed ever since we brought him home when he was 12 weeks old (he's 10 months now). He's been fine with them but over the last week he's decided that chewing them open and ripping out the stuffing is the most fun ever. We've tried distracting him from doing it by giving him something he can chew on, but we can't stop him from doing it when we're not here. We've tried taking it away from him but its winter and he lives mainly in the kitchen with its lino floor. He looks so sad sitting on the ground with no bed so we have to leave it in with him.
Any advice on how to get him to stop destroying his bed?

I made a mistake of investing in dog bed when my dogs were pups, they chewed through a nice expensive rattan one and 2 sheepskin ones (I used to live in VIC). Eventually at the age of 2, they have decided that chewing beds were not a good idea, now they each have a custom hand-sewed fur bed :)

Yeah, Potus's beds aren't that expensive, like $20-$30, though he's now had 4 due to throwing up on one of them, chewing them.
So you're pups just grew out of it? We're hoping Potus will do that, maybe when he realises that a bed with no stuffing isn't so cozy, lol. Until then I think we'll just pile them up and he can look like he's a Arabian prince will all his pillows, lol.

We have a stuffing-ripper too and we use plain old towels for his bedding. Just be careful if your dog is a towel-eater, as they can cause in impaction (ours will sometimes chew a bit on them, but does not actually eat them).
Someone who breeds Corgis recommended to me using those cheapest sorts of plain white baby quilts; they don't really have stuffing but are just two layers of fabric.
Maybe someone has some ideas, but personally I don't know of a way to keep a dog who has discovered the joys of ripping out stuffing to stop doing so.

Yeah he has some towels too and loves to chew them as well. He's been doing that since he was a pup though- and although he's destroyed many a stuffed toy (typically starting with the face, the cavity of which he rips the stuffing out of) he's been really good about not eating any of it. He did it once and threw up and never again has he swallowed it (knock on wood). Ripping the bed he's just discovered.

Wynn still sleeps in his original bed with one end or the other hanging out...he looks so funny...I have had more troulble with the stuffed pillow type beds than the foam beds but one that might work until he gets older is the sheepskin blanket type...I used these with my pups and adults and they have never chewed them...you can get a large blanket and fold it over...they don't have that fun stuffing to dig and pull out...and they wash up great many of mine are 3-4 years old. I also use these in my crates...

oh, this brings back memories. I was thoroughly convinced that Bertie only liked beds with holes in them -- every time I got him a new one, he would rip a hole in it. THEN he'd sleep in it just fine! He finally stopped somewhere between the ages of 1 and 2, and now he has hole-free beds. But GOSH it ran into $$. And both of mine seem to like the higher-end cushy beds with bolsters to rest their heads on -- but they're not spoiled or anything, and I don't know why people say that ;-) Also, those sheepskin crate liners/blankets suggested above remained chew-free for us, too -- just the fluffy beds apparently needed holes to be perfect.

They make a bed for dogs that is like a hammock almost. It would be very tough to chew but still comfortable. Our dobe eats fabrics and has had three very expensive surgeries! So be careful if he is actually eating it. It doesn't always pass. She gets kenneled when we are not here to watch her and can not have anything in her crate but a kong. I will try to look up the name of the other bed.

Yes I'm interested in this one Bev!
I bought Freya a bed at walmart for 3 buck! It was on sale--originally it was$20--a great deal. I hesitated on buying anything expensive with Freya as I know just how destructive she is and sadly I was right. It took her a couple of months--first she peed on it and then she ripped it to shreds. I took it away before she managed to devastate it too much.
Oddly, she still has the faux sherpa liner I bought for her crate and that was a 10 bucks investment that I cut in half just so the whole thing wasn't in there. She's so destructive that she helped destroy Milo, my foster, bed at one point. I swear.
I really hate that she has to lay on the hard surfaces but I really don't want to spend the money on it if it is going to break. We need to talk to the tough stuffed animal people about making a line of dog beds.

It is called a dog cot and Petco has one on it's web site. Our local feed supply carries them too so I don't think it would be hard to find online. Misty really liked hers but we can't use it anymore because it did not fit in her crate. She has to be crated when I am not home because she eats things! Like rugs,furniture and purses. Three very expensive surgeries later she lives with me now and is watched more closely! Good luck!

There's tough stuffed animals? Potus needs one of those, no stuffed animal lasts a day! we recently ent away for a week and brought him back a stuffed anchor that the sales lady said floated. Well seconds after we gave it to Po he had ripped the end off it. By the end of the day the only thing left was 2 sad looking scraps of paper. Needless to say, we never got to see if it floated.

Owen is a world class chewer. If it is on the floor, it is his. I wish they made beds out fire hose material.. I felt bad about him laying on the floor but the alternative is much more expensive. He will chew towels, blackets, bedding, etc. However, if he is on our bed.. he knows better.. I don't get it. I hope that at age two, it won't seem so appealing. BTW, he is fine on the floor.
