Yesturday, I felt like Romeo should go to the park since he been home all day. I put him in the car, and we drove. I stopped by the deli first to buy something, and usually Romeo never leaves the car when i get out of the car first. BUT THIS TIME HE got OUT my door when i was about to close it. He ran across the BUSY Street near cunningham park. Two cars just passed him and nearly almost killed HIm!! I was screaming and begging to Romeo to come back. And he just wouldn't. Than he came back to where I was but he cross another street. He just kept walking. When i chase after him, he would run so i Slowly walked behind him for AWHILE. (I also left my car on, not locked, and my stuff there.) Than finally I grabbed him. It took me literally 30 minutes, it felt like forever. How do I fix this bad behavior. Im so worried it might happen again. Also I like to add he never comes to me when i tell him to when were out. Even when i have treats, toys, and sticks. Sometimes when were home he will never come right infront of me. Always 1 feet away when i call him to come by commend. Someone help me T__T. I don't know how I would live without him. Does Romeo hate me? Am i bad mom?!

Potus doesn't like to come either. We're working on it but in the mean time, he is harnessed in the car, I open the door, attach his leash and then unhook him from the harness clip. And I try to keep the door closed against me, so that should he somehow get free he has to get past my body to get out- not going to happen.
I am glad Romeo is OK. I bet you were frantic! I read once that if your dog is ignoring you, just flop down on the ground and wiggle and make loud funny noises. I tried it with mine and they were all over me immediately. You look pretty silly but I guess in an emergency it might work. I always be in favor of obedience classes and you have gotten some good advice but I usually keep the leashes on my dogs in the car too.
Bev could be right as I know one time when I tripped in a hole and fell the dogs were there immediately checking me out! How scary!!!! My dogs get crated with leashes on and the very few times they're not in the crate they are leashed....
I heard that running away from the dog will make them chase you, so running away from a busy road would probably work. I do it on the beach and I get hearded and tripped all the time.
Thank you again. My voice do actually get 5x higher when i say "Good Boy". I def will improve my bond with him and train him more. I just hope Romeo and ALL dogs be safe and not run away
OH i also bought a Extra Heavy Chain leash from petsmart. That way if he runs away again it will slow him down because its heavy ;D Is it that bad for him?
ROFL!! aww Jane I hope you didn't get hurt. Yes i tried the laying down method long time ago. It WORKED. The UPS guy told me to lay down on the grass and LIL Romeo came next to me. But two days ago, it didn't really work.
Miranda did that with the house door. It was on a highway, not 20 feet away and she booked it between my legs. She was playing in the parking lot and smiling. Out of instinct I yelled and called her name and used some words I cannot type and I chased after her. After watching her reactions I figured out I did all the wong things. When I yelled at her, the ears went back and the tail no longer wagged. When I moved forward, she ducked and ran, when I ran she ran faster. After that I let her "escape" in a safe area on a 30 foot leash and called her back in a higher, freindlier voice. It took a while but she figured she was not in trouble and came back.

The next summer she did the same thing (she wanted to help me take the trash out apparently). She ran outside and looked at me with a grin, but she also looked startled like she might get yelled at. I used my squeakiest voice and caled her name with praise and she ran right to me happy I was not mad.

The joke behind this story, I was walking back to the house carrying her and calling her every horrible name I could think of but in a happy voice and she just heard the tone of my voice, not the words, so she was happy. My neighbors began laughing when they heard me and I had to explain it to them later. They still think i am nuts, but I am a nutter with a good dog. LOL
Aww thank god nothing happened to Miranda and Ziggy. LOL I love what you said Derek, the high pitch voice while saying bad names. LOVE IT. I think i should try that too instead of a mad tone.
Daisy's leash broke a few weeks ago while we were out in the front yard. She took off toward a car that was coming down my street. I was yelling for her to stop... but she kept heading to the car. The driver heard me yelling and she stopped. Daisy then ran in circles around the car with me calling her and chasing her. Then she took off past the car and down the street. She totally ignored me. Finally the girl driving the car started calling her name too and Daisy stopped in her tracks... turned around and ran to the girl and rolled over on her back to have her belly scratched!
Wow, that sounds terrifying! It's crazy how they become totally possessed when the mood strikes them.
Very true about dogs not coming when they are scared. I'm a dog walker and someones dog pulled out of my hand (he's been hit by a car before and a LOUD car went by and he bolted- which he had never done as he doesn't move very quickly) and he ran 5 blocks home, even though I was screaming his name... he was laying by his owners door howling when i found him.. :(
I'm sorry Romeo did that, must have been so scary! Tegan doesn't come when he's off leash at all, so I feel your pain. Corgi's are pretty hard headed sometimes x.x
