What do you think of my corgi's Breakfast/Dinner? Too over the top?

Ok, so I did not start with the crazy, indulgent meals you will hear about shortly. When Miranda was a pup she was fed Purina by her breeder. My family said Science Diet is the way to go for dog health so she was fed this for a while but she really did not like the food.

When it was time to switch her to adult food a freind told me about Wellness, a grain free food and Miranda LOVED it. Ok, now that the background story is done, fast forward 2 years. I have 2 dogs now, I am back on Science Diet, but the reduced calorie kind because Miranda has put on weight (stealing Morgan's puppy food). Miranda went to the groomers and came back with really dry itchy skin. This developed into a horrible head to toe rash. She was scratching all over and her belly was all scabs. The vet gave her drugs that made her sick, so they were not a good option. He also suggested feeding he olive oil in her food. He mentioned that the shampoo could have caused an allegic reaction in her, and it should go away over time..... it did not.

I removed things from her life that might have caused it, and although the rash lessened it did not disappear. I never thought it could be her food because she was on Science Diet as a pup and never had a problem. But my freind pointed out the reduced calorie is different, and so I should switch back to the food I had before. So Miranda and Morgan are on her Wellness Ocean fish again and happy and rash free. They are fed the same thing so there is no issue with "But MOM he got more than me," or " Hey his food smells different, I want that food!".

Now to her Meals:

1/2 cup wellness Core Ocean

1/2 cup sliced carrots

1-2 tbs of Olive Oil (my hand always slips and she gets 2 LOL)

and a few banana chips because the vet said they are healthy for her too.

They both get this in the morning and in the evening. Miranda has lost some pudge but not much, I think that the slow and steady weight loss is much better though. The carrots are a healthy filler so she is not hungry and stealing food. For cookies they get banana chips or low calorie treats like Charlie bears.

So to all those on here more knowledgable than I am, have I done alright with balancing what the vet suggested and what is healthy for my dog with what my dog is happy with? Any thoughts you can offer a dotting parent?

Thank you and sorry for the long explanation.

ps. the conclusion we came to is, the shampoo probably dried out her skin and it is winter time so the air s already dry. She was scratching at it and the food probably did not agree with her. The dry skin aggrivated the food allergy making it almost impossible to get rid of or find the reason for. So the two together created her issue. And now I groom her myself and she is on grain free food.

1/2 cup twice a day is still a lot for an adult corgi unless it is getting a lot of exercise. You could go to 1/3 cup twice a day if she still has weight to lose. Glad she is doing better!
I looked it up, and the food has 430 kcal per cup and according to her weight chart, Miranda should have 800-950 kcal a day. So between the food and the suppliments I think it is ok. She should loose weight at a nice slow pace.
How did you determine how many calories she should have? Finn gets about 3/4 cup food a day and his food has 409 kcal/cup. he used to get more but the vet said he could stand to be a little lighter to benefit his hips so we cut it back and he doesn't seem to be losing or gaining. ??

We feed a grain free food as well. After Finn developed digestive issues while eating Wellness the vet advised that we switch as it was caused by a food allergy. We switched to Natural Balance and he's been great on it. If you ever need another grain-free food you may want to check it out.

The only other suggestion I can give is maybe you could try mixing in green beans or pumpkin instead of the carrots to mix it up a bit since the carrots have a lot of sugar in them as do the bananas. They are healthy treats but I have heard that it is not good to give them regularly due to the sugar they contain. We add some pumpkin to Finn's dinner usually.
I did research and went online to see how many calories per cup the food has and how much it suggests for her size. Do you cook the pumpkin and green beans? If so how? I might reduce their food intake and add more veggies. Maybe I will start a mix of carrots and green beans. I am just not sure how to serve pumkin.
No cooking. We use canned pumpkin (plain pumpkin, not the pie filling that has seasoning in it). Green beans can be frozen or canned. It's very easy.

When I give Finn his food it always seems like so little and I kind of feel bad but I know that he doesn't need more than that and it would only result in weight gain.

I think when dealing with Corgis the recommended feeding amounts for dog foods are way too high.
thanks for the tips, I will look for it at the grocery store.
I have a friend who spent a fortune on prescriptions from the vet for all kinds of skin meds and the science diet food for skin allergies. When she told me she was feeding science diet (why do vets push this low, low, low quality food???!!!) I suggested she try Wellness. Long story short..... she switched and her dog now has a healthy coat and skin!!! No more meds!!! Again I ask.... why do the vets push science diet........ follow the buck!!!
I never figured out why vets always have this either...it sounds like a good thing by the name! My vet has it too and I just thanked them last week as the started carrying Canidae...I actually think I said something like "thank you for carrying a good brand finally! " Actually the vet tec and I have talked dog food for years.I believe that maybe people thing these major "smart" people came up with the perfect formula that is the best for animals????
Our vet tried to get us to buy SD too when Finn had symptoms of an allergy/food intolerance. I wasn't happy with the ingredients so I looked at all other brands out there and chose Natural Balance. It is a grain free, limited ingredient diet that is still very nutritious. Finn loves it and he's been very healthy since we switched to it. Vets must just push it because they benefit from the sales and that's wrong.
If she gets bored with carrots, give green beans a try--either frozen or canned. They seem to like those too. Aber was on the canned for years and now I'm going to try them with Ragnar while he's little so he learns to love them early :)
I always bring my own shampoo to the groomer.
I did today. I also changed to a groomer who uses a hose system that mixes the shampoo with water. I will not use one that puts the shampoo directly on the skin, it is too much for Miranda and it does not rinse out all the way. She loves her new groomer.
