Alwyn is currently 5 1/2 months and although we couldn't ask for a more fantastic pup, we're really REALLY working on the barking issue. It's quite interesting actually in a sense because he's been barking a lot more now since his voice deepened over the past month or so. When he does bark unnecessarily, we are very consistent in letting him know this behavior is not appropriate by squirting him with water and/or firmly saying "Enough".

However, I was wondering if anyone else's corgis have/are doing this behavior - when we tell him not to bark he will stop but then lower his head and look at us and give a low muffled "woof" as if he's talking back to us!! It's hilarious so it's hard to keep a straight face when being stern with him but he does it every time as if to get the last word/ruff in! It's great he's showing another side to his corgi personality but has anyone else had this issue with a corgi seemingly going through their terrible 2's?

"... he will stop but then lower his head and look at us and give a low muffled "woof" as if he's talking back to us!!"
I recognize this! Al does it, trying *so* hard to be good but he just can't make himself shut up! Ears back, head down, looking up, "rrruuuuufffff!"
HA! That is precisely what Alwyn does! It's as if there's no self control. =)

A side note John, I admire your adventures with your corgis! We've already started Alwyn with an 11,000 mile road trip and he'll be joining us on tackling all of the 4,000 footers out here in New England!
That's hilarious. LOVE your description John. Kota doesn't do this. He will either decide to listen to me telling him not to bark or not. If not, he will get squirted sometimes and then he stops. He will most likely stop if I just call him to me instead of just telling him "no barking" or whatnot.
Rufus is just a little older and we're also working on the barking issue. I've found, though, that a lot of his barking means "play with me". If I get toys out and distract him with a game, it goes away. Unfortunately, his favorite is "chase" around the sofa, and I just don't have the stamina he does.
Oh yeah Sparty is a master at the closed mouth woof. Definitely talking back!
Oh yea they are little personalities alright :) Sounds like you have a normal corg right there.

The pups here go through phases. They'll go for days being quiet and then for a few days they'll bark at EVERYTHING.

When we tell them to be quiet Roxi will lay down and vibrate. Grr.. gr... gr... ggrrrrrr. If your standing next to her you'll hear the little purr and you'll feel the vibration in the floor lol.

charlie will leave the room with a final WOOF! as if he's talking back at us.
I am familiar with the "woof" too. If Alwyn does this when barking for attention, he might be talking back. If he does it when he's alert-barking, he might be so concerned about the outside sounds that set him off that he literally can't help but bark, but he's trying to be good for you. In that case, I'd be reluctant to use an aversive and would prefer to use a reward-based system to teach him to emotionally relax enough to let it go, rather than try to control the outward expression of his stress.
I have two backtalkers. It takes a lot of work to get the last word in this house.
I managed to teach Waffle when it was okay to bark by smacking him lightly in the face when he did it unnecessarily. But, try as I might, he still barks under his breath if he's concerned enough. I just let him do it. haha.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one with this problem! Guinness does it too, and he's almost 3. It's like he can't control himself sometimes. He barks then ducks his head and runs a few feet away because he knows he's not supposed to. He mostly does this when another dog in the neighborhood barks, most often the german shepherd who lives behind us. He also gruffs back at us, and I know that he's talking back, the little toad.

Reading these posts tells me that I've got a "normal" corgi. He also does the under-his-breath grrrrrrrrrl if he hears something that bothers him and we tell him to be quiet.
Noodles just recently turned 5 and he still back talks. I'll tell him to stop barking and he will give 3 more quiet barks and just when I think he is done, he will look at me and give a very quiet bark. Ugh! I find it pretty funny, but hopefully I don't let him know I think it is funny.
Now about the terrible 2's...Noodles went for a good 8 months where he wouldn't listen to me. I couldn't trust him off his leash because he wouldn't come back when called. I thought those months would never end and then magically one day, he decided to listen to me again. Now he can be off his leash and he will come to me when called. I just said he was going through his terrible 2's and thank goodness those days are over with.
It's nice to hear how many of you have corgis who do the same behavior - even ones who "vibrate"! He'll bark at nearly anything right now - the cats walking by or teasing him as we believe they're doing, us walking in the kitchen, doors opening, anything! So we're trying to let him understand when it's ok and not ok to bark. We are definitely aware when he's alert barking about something outside. It's obvious by the way he perks his ears, his overall mannerisms and the type of bark he makes. He mostly does this after we've been outside at night and something spooks him (he's quite the mix of Scooby and Scrappy Doo!). We don't reprimand him for this, just comfort him of course! =)

But those talk back ruffs are absolutely cute, thank you all for sharing your same experiences!

Allison, I can relate to you on not entirely trusting him at this age off leash. He's great 80% of the time but if another dog barks or kids walk by he'll walk away and look at us at the same time, knowingly trying to see how far he can push his limits. I know these days will end in the upcoming months and I'm sure they'll end the same way they did with you and Noodle. It's funny though because we will let him off leash on certain trails when we go hiking and he stays right with us without any problems. Get him out of that environment and it can be a different story. All in time though, he's doing fantastic for being almost 6 months!
