I found out the hard way a popular sweetener is toxic for dogs!

I just got home from emergency!
I had to leave my Romeo there.
Being a very inquisitive 10 month old, he got into my purse and ate some trident sugar-free chewing gum.
Luckily I noticed right away what he had done!
It is toxic to dogs!
So they had to make him vomit it up!
They are testing his glucose levels every hour.
Also they will take x-rays and give him IV fluids.
All it takes is 1-2 sticks of gum to be toxic!
He ate around 7!!!!
Basically he will be there for 12-24 hours!

This is a BIG FYI keep anything containing xylitol away from your precious little ones!

Poor Romeo, hope he is OK.
I am so glad that you noticed right away! I wasn't aware that it was so toxic! And it is great that you are sharing this with others! I am sure that Romeo will be doing better real soon!
Wow!! Thank goodness you were right there!!! Get better real quick Romeo!!!
Hope Romeo is better real soon!!!
Thanks for posting this. If you have a dog, you don't want xylitol in the house.

I had no ideia that was toxic!!! Get well soon Romeo...
Oh gosh! I hope he'll be okay. :[
I had read this in a dog care book, so we looked at our gum and sure enough it had Xylitol in it. So out it went and when we went to the store we read all the labels until we found one with out! I hope precious Romeo does okay!!! I am glad you caught it early. Please keep us informed as to his progress.
I had a friend on Friday post on Facebook how funny it was that her chihuahua has minty breath after eating a piece of gum. Unfortunately she wasn't aware of the toxic nature of the xylitol. Luckily I and another doggie mommy called her as soon as we saw the post and the pup was rushed to the vet and is doing well. Thank you for sharing as it helps spread the word. Hope Romeo is doing well.
