Well, just returned from the vet, and Sparty is on another round of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. His foot is not better and he is so pitiful limping around with his "cone of shame". If this does not improve things, we will have to consider amputating his toe and having it biopsied. Unfortunately it could be cancer. Apparently doing a biopsy on the attached toe would be as bad as amputating so since it is not a weight baring toe it is better to go all the way. That will either tell us whether it is cancer or it will cure the infection. At almost 13 years old he has had more than his share of problems with his bad nails. My vet says it is most likely a genetic defect. Yet another reason to pay more and get a puppy from a reputable breeder. In spite of our bad fortune with Sparty he is still the most interesting and fun dog I have ever had (and I have known many) so I am not sorry but I won't do it again.
1/30th Another Sparty update. Unfortunately Sparty is not better. The toe is being removed on Wednesday and will be biopsied. Keep us in your positive thoughts! I am trying not to freak out but it is difficult right now. Sparty has been a trouper through this whole thing. The surgery sounds like it won't be easy but we have a great vet so wish us luck!

:-( Poor Sparty! Good warning about being careful about breeders and using one who can tell you everything about every cousin's cousin. But what a great dog he is and sorry to hear he's not healing well.
Oh Sparty...I hope you are asking for lots of good treats! Good luck you two:)
Poor Sparty. I'm sorry to hear your toe is not healing. I pray this round of antibiotics will cure the infection.
Hope he is better. He is in Dinos thoughts and prayers
Poor guy, hopefully it will turn out to be an infection that can be taken care of... (and he'll be able to get out of the cone of shame quickly!)
So sorry Sparty, praying that this round of antibiotics will get rid of the infection and you will not have to go through with amputating the toe.
Sending well wishes to you Sparty, Feel better soon:)
I hope Sparty and his foot feel better soon! Here's hoping it isn't cancer, too!
Sparty, you don't need all those toes! :-) Franklin says it will add even more character to have one less! Hopefully he feels better and amputation isn't necessary!
I maybe missed the orginal post about Sparty and his toe but wanted to share my experience with the toe of my yellow lab, Travis. One day we noticed he was biting and licking frantically at one of his toes on a back foot (can't remember which one) We checked it out with a flashlite, squeezing and looking for a sore, couldn't find anything. Now Travis is a wuss when it comes to his feet, carries on like torture to get nails trimmed, etc. so we waited a few days. It didn't seem to get better, just more swollen, red and painful so I took him to the vet. She examined and then xrayed it and we couldn't find a thing! She ended up shaving the area, there was a little red sore there, so put on salve, wrapped it up, satillete dish on and a round of anti-biotics. After the med was done he seemed better but within a week, back to the same as before. Another round of anti-b's and since it was wet outside, I put some duck tape around his "sock" bandage..2 days later I was looking at the sore and it was yucky still but something looked like it was poking out. I took a tweezers and ended up removing a 2 1/2" piece of splintered mulch out of his foot!!!! thicker than a toothpick. It never showed up on the xray cause it was wood! Now I am not saying this is what is wrong with Sparty, but maybe he picked up a splinter that is festering? Worth an exam again before he loses his toe. We will be sending him positive thoughts & prayers (and corgi kisses)
