Brando finally made it home after 48 hours spent in the Houston airport, and Sky gave him a nice big bully's welcome! I never even thought to be worried about Sky, I was concerned with how Lyla would react. I introduced the dogs outside and Lyla loved him instantly, but Sky just acted like he didn't exist. When they came in Brando was sniffing around and started smelling a sock on the ground. Sky instantly snarked... apparently it was "his" sock. So far Sky is telling off the puppy for…

How many "dog issues" can one person have in a day? Apparently a lot! The new puppy got stuck in the Houston airport on his way to Oklahoma because Continental decided to cancel ALL flights for today even though it wasn't snowing or icing or even raining. It didn't start even raining until after her flight was supposed to land. I was worried sick about him all day, but luckily I have an uncle who is a pilot for Continental and when he landed in Houston tonight, he went and check on Brando for…

Sky and Lyla are getting a new brother on Thursday! His call name is Brando, after Marlon Brando because I love Guys and Dolls and Streetcare Named Desire, and I always thought it would be cool to have a big red dog named Brando... very masculine. His show name is Katahdin Into the Wild (breeder picked it).
My biggest concern is just making sure Lyla is okay making this transition. She has a tendency to get timid and stressed easily, so I am going to get her used to Brando slowly.…

As many of you know, I have decided to get into the world of dog showing, specifically with Australian Shepherds. After much searching and a few discouraging conversations I feel upon a breeder that I just absolutely loved. We talked about a puppy she had shortly after we connected, but it was just too short notice for me to come up with the kind of money a show prospect costs. I decided to wait for her next litter not knowing how long that might take, but knowing that gave me lots of time to…

I remember just two years ago talking to a co-worker and saying, "that's great that you have 3 dogs, but I'm a cat person. I just don't really like dogs." Six months later when I bought Sky I was the poster child for the kind of person who didn't have ANY business buying a puppy, but I was the one in a million that impulse bought a puppy and ended up really being a dog lover, did my research, and want to get involved in the dog world any way possible. I DO NOT recommend anyone follow my…

One of my goals for this year is to save up enough money to buy my long awaited first show dog. And it is going to take the whole year (maybe even a little longer) to save up enough money for that sucker! In the mean time, I think I have decided that I would like to try fostering, both to help out in rescue and to see how my life will function with 3 dogs (although I have a feeling the jump from 2 to 3 is easier than from 0 to 1, or even from 1 to 2). I found a little BHT Corgi male about 1.5…

1) Find cheap toy (in this case, football that neighbor kids threw over the fence)
2) Let dogs outside
3) Throw football to far corner of yard
4) Go back inside and watch last night's DVR'ed Desperate Housewives while dogs play chase with the football for at least 45 minutes
(I promise I'm not lazy so much as I don't enjoy getting frostbite in the lovely 9 degree weather we are having tonight)

Early this morning I found two stray dogs running around the neighborhood. They had collars but no tags. I spent all morning calling rescues, trainers, vets, and driving around all the surrounding neighborhoods looking for "Lost" posters. I posted an ad on craigslist and even went to all the surrounding pet supply stores that were having adoption fairs to look for help. Sadly, I could not find their owner and none of the rescues had room. I just had to take them to the animal shelter, which…

Santa brought me some handy dandy sofa covers to catch all that pet hair that floats around my house. I love that the picture on the packaging is a Corgi. Some advertising person understood that Corgi owners could really understand the value of a good sofa cover! Sadly, they sent the wrong color, so I have to wait for the new ones to come in, but that's okay. Can't wait to try them…

Ever since Sky was a 12 week old puppy, I have kept bells hanging on the door leading to outside so he could tell me when he needed to go potty. This worked well for us at the time. I was living in an apartment on the third floor (why I ever thought it was a good idea to have an Aussie puppy in an apartment is a whole other story!) and the bells were an excellent way for him to tell me he needed to go out even when I couldn't see the front door. After the newness of "hey I can make the door…

Lyla took her herding instinct test today and passed with flying colors! It was the first one I'd ever been to and it was very interesting. It was neat to watch the different dogs' reactions to the sheep. Some dogs were more interested in the sheep poo, and others walked in and knew exactly what to do.
Only 4 of the 7 dogs passed, and Lyla passed the 2nd fastest! Yay Ly! The judge wrote on our eval sheet "Good job! She got right to work like she'd being doing this her whole life." It…

I just signed Lyla up for her herding instinct test! It is Sunday afternoon. I'm so excited! She is such a shy, timid dog a lot of the time, so I'm hoping she enjoys herding and maybe it can be a good confidence booster for her. Wish us luck!
I also finally got around to doing her AKC registration paperwork today since her reg number was required for the test. It's been sitting in my purse for almost 7 months now! Oops! I just haven't had a need for it until now. =)

Many of you know that Lyla had to make a trip to the animal hospital last night. I did hear from the daycare/boarding facility owner today and found out that yes, Lyla got fed yesterday... twice! I'm thinking that even just two meals though, they must have fed her A LOT for her to be as big as she was. The owner was very apologetic, and I said I understood how things can happen, and I had forgotten to mention that neither of my dogs get anything other than food I bring (I never said this when I…

Okay, this may be one of the cutest dogs I've ever seen! I have to stop this Craigslist addiction I have. He is up for adoption though in the Tulsa area if anyone wants him!

The Dog Dish put up the pictures from the Halloween party. Here is me and the puppies getting our prize basket. I can't believe how stinking young I look in this picture. I look like a teenager, lol. I guess I shouldn't complain! =)

Lyla waited until I left the room, and then decided to check out the Taco Bueno bag on the coffee table. When I came back, she was caught red-handed, so she just decided to play it cool with that "huh? I wasn't doing anything," face.

I think, for the first time in my life, I can truly understand what would drive someone to harm someone else's dog. I have put up with our new neighbors' dog for over a month now and all the horrible things that have come along with it. My dogs can't play outside unsupervised anymore because their dog starts fence fights (and as much as I hate to place the blame all on their dog and not think my precious pups could do any wrong, I have been working hard to teach mine that this is not acceptable…
