I am having problems getting Clutch to eat. It all started about two months ago when we switched him form Blue Buffalo (that he has eaten since August of last year) to Wellness. Usually Clutch would wait for us to give him the ok before he started to eat (he would be excited and then run to his dish and chow down) but once we switched foods he wouldn't even come in the kitchen when we got his food out. We switched back to his old food and he started to eat normally again for about a week but then went back to not caring and skipping meals.

This weekend we went to visit my parents who have two dogs. We visited for three days and Clutch only ate two meals (of his own food) the entire time we were down there. He did sneak some food that was for the other dogs so that makes me think that it isn't a tummy problem and that it could be a stubborn corgi problem.

Today I filled his dish at 6:30 and now, 7 hours later, he still has not touched it. He is taking treats for doing tricks or being good outside. The treats that I am using are actually his food. He doesn't usually get people food and I have not been toping his dinner with green beans for about three months so I don't know what he is holding out for. I did add two crumbs of hamburger to his dish yesterday just because I hate seeing him not eat and still he poked around and took forever to eat it.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can make his food interesting again without having to give him tasty toppings to eat it I would love to hear them.

My previous Corgi was a finicky eater.  I would dribble plain yogurt (Brown Cow) on the top and she absolutely loved it.  Be sure you get the regular yogurt and not the fat or sugar free.....

Don't leave the food down all day. Give him breakfast and leave it down for about 20 min then pick it up and no food until dinner. You can try adding warm water to the food also. Franklin did not like blue buffalo after I had been feeding it about a year. He quit eating for about 4 days so I switched him to taste of the wild and hes been eating fine since. Don't add anything like human food or treats to his meal to try to entice him bc that will just make him more picky. My guess is if you start picking up his food he will learn quickly that if he doesn't eat at meal time he doesn't get to eat at all.

My goal is to not have to give him any "goodies" to get him to eat. I will start to pick up is dish after a little while and see how that goes.

As Melissa said I would try adding a little water and picking up the bowl after 20 minutes. He'll figure it out. A healthy dog will not starve himself.

I've heard that adding chicken or beef broth in with kibble can make it pretty appetizing. I'd just add a little dribble, though, you don't want to soak his food in it as it can be quite high in sodium.

A finicky corgi?   Isn't that an oxymoron?

Check the expiration date on the package. We got an outdated one and Rosie flat out refused to eat it. Rocky shoveled in it like there was no tomorrow. Go figure!

I can not find the date. I cut the top of the package off and don't know if it was on there or not. There are numbers on side of the bag but I can't tell if it the expiration date or not.

Lucy does the same thing. I try to change it up a little, but mostly she eats when she wants to. At times she chows down like there is no tomorrow and other times, she picks at it or eats about half. All other indications say she's fine: energy, poop, sassiness, weight, etc. It is worrisome though. Don't you wish they could just "use their words" to tell you what they want?!

I agree with Melissa, put the food down twice a day for 20 minutes and then pick it up. I think your corgi is still young and could still have some teething going on so softening the food with water may help. If he actually refuses food for a couple days I would check with the vet, could be an abscess or something.

Most of mine have gone through a stage where they won't eat or eat very slowly and I just take the food bowl up after 15-20 minutes and wait till the next feeding. Sooner or later, they'll eat unless there's some illness at work.  Otherwise, IMO, picky eaters just need to get hungry and things are resolved.

I feed livesmart kibble from Smartpak (similar to wellness brand) and have no problems at all.

I had the same problem. You just have to wait them out. Eventually, they are hungry enough to stop being stubborn and eat. A few days without food won't hurt them. Just don't give in to their rules.
