My daughter had a tiny kitten, she brought him home at around 5 weeks and Archie adored him, we knew when Max had been around Arch, cos he was soaking wet, after getting some Archie love!

We had this kitten for about 3 months and he was still very tiny, then he developed cat flu.  Last weekend he went downhill very rapidly and appeared to be paralysed from halfway down his back, we could not get the Vet that night but the following morning it was clear that Max was very poorly.  As I was getting ready to go to the Vets, Max got his last does of "Archie love".  I took him to the vet and he died in my arms as we were waiting to be seen.  I obviously came home without this little scrap of fur, and Archie appeared to be looking for him.  He has not eaten properly since then, he mopes around occasionally crying and will not under any circumstances come anywhere near me.  Do you think he is mourning his little friend?  We know there is nothing wrong with him as I had him checked at the Vet the following day just to be sure.

I got Bear in March of last year as an 8 week old puppy. At that time my boyfriend and I were living together - we broke up in September and he moved out. Bear looked for him for about 3 weeks. When we went outside he would look for his truck. When I was sitting downstairs, he would run upstairs to check and see if he was there, then come downstairs and give me this look like, "where is he hiding?" After about a month it passed, but it broke my heart, maybe more than the breakup.

Sorry about your kitty. :(
I do think dogs grieve. When we lost our Basil, it took Lizzie a long time to want to play again. She seemed to look everywhere for him.
YES! they do grieve...We lost Gem's brother and litter mate(Phinny) to a car accident when he was only about 8mos this past summer and she looked all over for him throughout the house etc....saddest thing...anyway by chance we happened upon this cute Corgi puppy soon after named Edward and he has been the best medicine for all of us(though we all still miss our Phinny terribly) I am so sorry about your loss by the way. Would you consider another Kitten???????
Yes, they grieve! If possible I would get another kitten! Sorry about your kitten also!
It does appear that dogs can grieve, though they don't always. It does seem to depend on how close the two animals were; some animals can live together and more or less ignore each other.

If Archie was grooming Max then clearly they had bonded and whether he is grieving or just stressed over the unexplained change in the household, it all looks pretty much the same to us so I would think of it as grieving.

I am sorry about your poor kitten.
Sparty definitely grieved for Buffy for almost a year after she died. We got Izzy soon after and although he was nice to her, he really did not try to play with her for almost a year. Sorry about your kitten. It is sad that they are so fragile when they are babies.
