Ok, ... not the best topic but i am really scared.

Dusty this morning on our run got run over completly by a bike heading full speed down a pedestrian pathway. he was completely run over, then rolled further down the hill limp into the bush, the bike rider wasnt ok either, taken t hospital etc.

a horrible morning.

NOw in my head al i see if little dusty being squashed and the bike rider in bad shape. both still

dusty is at the vet now, apparently no internal bleeding, i would say a broken foot, leg and ribs.... i just want to know, a few questions and get a few different opinions

1. chance of brain damage
2. chance of him changing, being scared etc. he is such a happy active dog
3. approximate recovery time
4. problems later on in his little life
5. chance of running, although  ust want him to be ok and happy

i feel like a complete failure of a dog owner, the police say i did nothing wrong  - i think it will be a long time until i have kids because i can stand the guilt of hurting my poor pup now

OMG, I am so sorry to hear this. I constantly have to deal with the same thing - bikes on pedestrian walkways!!!! Makes me so angry. I can't offer any answers to your questions but I do hope everything turns out okay for all. We have to constantly be vigilant to our surroundings and expect the unexpected. Please keep us posted as to Dusty's recovery.
thanks... he is going ok now on morphine - woke up once to bark at us jump of the couch and pee on the floor - he is forgiven... it was so early in the morning in the forest path, honestly i could nothave forseen this...

amazingly, he has nothing broken nasty scratches and bruises.
Thanks for your email....
NO BREAKS!!! That is fantastic news!!! Give him lots of cuddles and let him heal, try to keep him at a very low activity level - these dogs are very resilient.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. What a cutie he is! Hang in there, we all know the feeling your going through when they are in pain or sick and there's not much we can do but LOVE them. Please keep us posted on how he is doing, it very good he doesn't have anything broken!
Unfortunately we can not protect them from everything! I sure hope he is alright and home with you soon. This is a problem all over. Bikers can be very inconsiderate and at the speed they can travel they do not belong on sidewalks.
1. There is always a chance, depending on the force of the impact.
2. There is a chance, but you can help him to overcome that.
3. Depending on what bone and what kind of fracture, what kind of rehab method, recovery time varies.
4. Very hard to say without full diagnosis
5. Very good, especially when the spine was not injured.

I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through Heather, it is not your fault and there's nothing you could have done to prevent it. It was an accident. If you look at it from a physics point of view, it was very fortunate that it was a bike with rolling wheels and Dusty was not hit by a heavy weight blunt object, a lot of the force was reduced by rolling.

Corgis are tough and fierce dogs, they have the ability to herd cows that are 66 times their own weight. I'm sure Dusty will be back to his old self after rehab. Get well soon!
Heather... hope you will come to the point within yourself where you realize there wasn't much you could do to prevent this from happening! I understand your feelings of guilt tho.... because last year when Soffie tore her acl I harbored the same feelings: (If I just hadn't let her off her leash to run free.... she wouldn't have been running full tilt, she wouldn't have stepped in the hole..... what if, what if....) It was an accident.

Thanks goodness it sounds like Dusty is going to be fine. And as far as possible fear of bikes.... if it was me, as soon as he's able to be out and about I'd have friends ride bikes by him to see how he reacts. It may not bother him at all. And if it does, keep exposing him to bike riders periodically until he becomes more comfortable.

Soffie used to bolt when she heard an air brake sound, but she barely notices now.

And like Sam says..... corgis are tough little dogs!!

Judi
Sorry to hear that. Dusty will definitely change after an incident like that, but with your help, he will change for the better. He will be on the look out for traffic when he is on the street. Sam is right, Corgi are tough little dogs, he will be back to his old self in no time. Best wishes and get well soon!
Oh no! How scary! Like others have said, it is not your fault and sadly risk is a part of life. If we protected them from every risk, they'd be fat and bored in plastic bubbles.

I can't really speculate on the physical damage, but mentally don't be surprised if he remembers nothing of the incident. Between the natural adrenaline/ endorphins produced during the shock of the accident, and the heavy-duty pain meds, you may find her does not even remember what happened to him. The suggestion to have friends ride by slowly in a controlled situation is a good one.

Quick healing to you both.
I'm so sorry to hear about Dusty, but very happy to hear that he has no broken bones. Like others have said, have people ride by him on bikes. Not that Noodles was ever hit with a bike, but for some reason, he hated bikes. The only way I found to get him over that fear was to have people with bikes ride around him and now he is perfectly fine with them.
I am so sorry for you and Dusty! Keep in mind Corgis are herding dogs so sometimes get knocked around by cattle and other livestock. What is a bicyclist doing on the path anyways? Keep us posted on Dusty's recovery.
Hello, I want to thank everyone for these posts - it was REALLY hard yesterday but these little words of encouragement were so so nice.
Dusty seams to be ok, still walking stiff and sore, he started the morning with his normal cheeky bark to get outside - although when out side he didnt go far but still, its so much better then yesterday.
The thing about being scared of bikes, i dont think he actually sore the bike - one went past today and he didnt notice, he has never been scared of anything so i was hoping a bit more awareness would have made life easier - but he still seams the same.
We are so lucky to have these little corgis... all of you can understand the unique personalities of each of them x
