Orion's ACL repair surgery was done yesterday afternoon after tearing it on sunday. He seems to be doing well, except perhaps a little jealous watching the free-roaming Laika and cat from his kennel :(

Check this out, very interesting , esp. the harrowing story of Damka and Krasavka, who survived a trouble-plagued flight. I never realized so many dogs were astronauts.
They were in the news today, with the Sotheby's auction of a Vostok capsule that carried Zvyozdochka (named by Yuri Gagarin) for 1 orbit prior to Gagarin's orbital flight.
Maybe you know all this already...

John Wolff said… Interesting reading about Laika, who was deliberately sacrificed. Several of the people responsible were remorseful later, saying that not enough was learned to warrant killing a dog. Research was done on animals (and people) in the 50s & 60s that never would be allowed nowadays.
Two other dogs died in the Soviet space program: they did have a reentry vehicle, but the retrorocket failed to shut off, slowing it too much so it reentered at too steep an angle and incinerated.
A statue somewhere in Russia honors Laika.
