Normal Growth Rate For Corgis

I am looking at our little pup, Hazel. He is 4.5 months going on 5 months next week and weights about 20lbs. I do not have the measurements for his mom and dad but mom is definitely a bigger corgi and dad is medium sized. I've included some photos below for reference. The reason for my post is I am concerned with his growth rate. Is he growing too quickly for the breed? If he is, what stress is being put on his little joints that could lead to spine and joint problems including hip dysplasia…

Registering a Pet-Quality Pup with the AKC: WHY????

Sooo... the American Kennel Club has been importuning me to purchase any number of services and products for  Ruby-Doo the Corgi Pup, even though sometime in the next five or six months she will be spayed, and even though the rankest amateur can see at a glance that she is not, repeat NOT, a show-quality corgi. And that is even though pup's registration papers distinctly state "OFFSPRING OF THIS DOG NOT ELIGIBLE FOR REGISTRATION."

In addition to …

Lessons From Redecorating

Here is what I learned from yesterday's interior painting...1.) Oil based paint fumes are toxic to animals. I thought I would have to take Amy to the emergency vet with neurological and emotional distress. 2.) The burners on your gas stove burn the paint fumes and turn them into something that smells like kerosene and makes you think you are about to die. 3.) Corgis are like furry cockroaches and none of the above…

Oh dear...

Where to start?

Well, since I last came by MyCorgi.com, Spider had a bout with lyme disease which was successfully treated and was pretty healthy and happy until late last December, when he stopped eating for several days before becoming violently ill.

I had made an appointment to take him in the next morning due to his decreased appetite but ended up rushing him to a 24 hour emergency vet hospital after I discovered how sick he'd been (all over the room and…

Who would shoot a corgi with a pellet or bb gun??

We had a little emergency trip to the vet last night after a wild frap session resulted in a hurt leg ;-<   Chewey was frapping through the house and out the backdoor just as someone was coming in and he bounced off the door and into some patio furniture.  I guess he must have caught his back leg along the way because he let out some blood-curdling cries for several minutes and then wouldn't put any weight on his leg...;-/p>

So, rather than second guess myself all…

Wynn hurt his back:(

We just got home from a last minute trip to the vet. I had called Wynn in from outside where he had been for several hours enjoying the 70 degree temps and the sun. He couldn't get up and his leg was looking funny so I knew it was his back or leg. Somehow he made it to the car when I went in to get something and I lifted him in. After several times of checking his spine and legs the vet told me it was his back and to "hold his head and upper body tight. The vet moved his legs and hips every…

A wonderful Product for a lucky dog

I have to share this product with you guys! I believe it was a huge factor to my girl's quick recovery from an dog attack that landed her in ICU for 2 days and in a cone and rest for 3 weeks. The images of the injury are pretty graphic so here's the link https://picasaweb.google.com/114496480725773812681/November12011?authuser=0&feat=directlink  2 vets told us she would need…

Pet Armour Plus

Boo Boo the Bear isn't our first dog; but he is our first Corgi. We had a cocker spaniel & a scotty terrier, Ripley & Toby respectively.

I was unaware of the flea medications out there with Rips and Tobers so the inevitable happened, and I had a flea infestation in my house.  OMG!  the cost was horrid...  I think I spent almost $1000 trying to get rid of them that summer.

Now I'm wiser and started using frontline plus, but I've read in my consumer…

Corgi Pet Insurance Recommendations?

Hi,

I have a corgi puppy that is about to turn a year old and he is also my first dog.

I'm thinking about getting pet health insurance for him but am not sure how to start or which one to take. Since when I googled it there were so many options I got a little overwhelmed.

Plus, I have been told my some that it is not necessary for pet insurance until they are much older, but am not really sure what to do here.

Anyone have advice for me please?

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and a reminder on pet safety for picnics.

Just a reminder to keep our furry friends safe:)

Common Picnic Poisons

Lastly, for you picnickers, make sure to keep common household picnic items out of reach when with your pets. Every day the Pet Poison Helpline receives many calls about pets getting into people food, some of which can be remarkably harmful.

  • Xylitol: This natural sugar substitute is low-calorie to you, but is dangerous to dogs, as it causes a severe drop in blood sugar and…

Knocking on Wood

So Lilly got spayed on Monday.  I use a vet that actually comes to the house in this mobile home thing, and so she was able to recover here in the house.  She gulped water down that evening and of course vomited it all up. But then I watched her and called her away everytime she went for more than 3 laps. So by the time we went to bed, she was doing well. The next morning, I tried her with a handful of dry food.  After making sure is was going to stay down for 20 minutes I fed her a normal… Continue

New Itchy Problem

We live in Florida a typically hot and humid place, lately it has been dry and cold. This is when Benjamin has started his new problem. He is itching and biting like crazy. He is itching so much that he he is causing himself to bleed. We don't have fleas, and we haven't changed his diet. We know that we have been dealing with extremely dry skin ourselves (lack of moisture in the air) and we believe that this is his problem. Is there something we can put on him to soothe his itchiness?

puppy exposed to dog with ringworm?? advice please!

Hello!

My lil Ollie is 3 months old (yesterday) and 2 weeks shy of his last puppy shots. This morning, our neighbor's dog (who Ollie has played with a couple of times in the last day or 2) was diagnosed with Ringworm -- HOLY MOLY. As a protective mommy, I'm seeking advice on what I should do??

He's already had his deworming and seems in wonderful health. I checked him all over and didn't find a sign of anything and will bathe him tomorrow and…

Cuts on the neck

Well, we haven't had to worry about a corgi with cuts of any kind for at least 4 years! Lucky has been crippled, and when we rescued Sonny a year ago, he just kinda stayed under the desk for a couple of months and then right with us. Well...he discovered the large rocks on the South side of the front yard a couple months ago and likes to climb them, and he climbs around all over the place now. Today we discover blood on his neck, doessn't appear to be a puncture wound or to have come from…

A lot has happened

I've been lax in being active here, unfortunately.

In the time since I've last logged in, a bit has happened with Spider. He spent a while in a boarding kennel in the summer of 2007 while Nate and I took a trip down to Memphis, TN to visit family aboard Amtrak.

And most recently (and severely), he had a health scare. We had left the house to run some errands and when we came home, a heavy scent of bleach fumes greeted us. Apparently someone had been using it to clean near… Continue

Questions about medication

Howdy all! I'm so glad drag is back to his old self again, after a long recovery for both of us.

Thanks for all your help and concerns. I love you guys!

Anyway i have a question about drags eating habits. He's eating double of what he usually eats. Do you think its from the medicine? He eats alot in the morning, which he used to never do. He usually always ate at 9pm and thats the only time he would eat, eventhough i left food out for him 24/7.

He is on… Continue

Female Corgi UTI Issues

Sandy is a 6 year old female and has experienced a barrage of medical problems in the last two years. She herniated two disks in her back and had back surgery a little over 1 year ago. Luckily she recovered and is doing well although she has lingering nerve damage in one rear leg. Since her surgery, she has 5 urinary track infections. Her most recent diagnosis was this past Friday. It seems that she cannot go 3-4 months without experiencing a UTI. In two weeks (after the antibiotic course) we… Continue

D.E.N.T.I.S.T.

Sadie didn't know what that meant, but right now... she does. At least she has her favorite froggie squeaky toy with her to keep her company during the ordeal.

She's at the Vet. It's just a routine dental, but she needs to be put under because there is no way she would sit still to have this done while awake. We're getting her micro-chipped at the same time. I know I shouldn't be worried... and the date is just the date... but Mercury is still doing it's retrograde boogie and Sadie… Continue
