ASPCA Managing Operations in Mississippi Puppy Mill Investigation

I subscribe to the ASPCA newsletter and this heading caught my eye. I looked at what breeds were in the Puppy Mill and 'lo and behold, they said they found corgis. I'm glad that the ASPCA was finally able to step in and get these animals out. Unfortunately, it looks like they were a little too late for some of the dogs.

Tim Rickey, the ASPCA Senior Director of Field Investigations and Response, says the dogs, which include small breeds such as Shih Tzus,…

NYC's Laws Against Large Dog Breeds

I was stunned this morning when I read this news on the New York Times website: Large Dogs in Public Housing Are Now Endangered Species. The law restricts the breeds in which a resident of public housing may keep and forces residents to forfeit their dogs or be evicted. Some breeds affected are pure-bred or mixed bred pit bulls, Rottweilers and Doberman pinschers and any dog with an expected adult… Continue

Excessive Itchiness

Izzie has been scratching herself constantly lately. I even try to give her half a Benadryl but that only seems to help her for maybe an hour and then she's back to scratching her neck or biting at her paws. My poor baby. She doesn't seem to be breaking skin or making herself bleed. The only thing I can think of is that I changed her food from the regular Blue Buffalo lamb and rice formula to the weight control formula a few weeks ago. It's the same brand of food though, so I am kind of at a… Continue

1 Year Checkup

I was hoping to make a post about Izzie and how much she has grown in the short time I've had her and come back from the vet with a clean bill of health, but unfortunately not!

I got Isabella from her breeder last June, so now Izzie and I have been best buds for more than a year now. She was due for her yearly checkup and rabies and parvo yearly vaccinations. I had told the vet that she has been bitten by a lot of ticks since we moved into our apartment and that I wanted the Lyme… Continue

Happy Birthday Izzie!

At midnight I sang Happy Birthday to Izzie even though she just sat there in a tired lump and looked at me like I was crazy. Oh well, I'm happy! She is now a year old. :) Any ideas of what to give her as a special treat for her birthday?

Izzie's Spay

Thank you for the support and advice getting Izzie through her heat. She refused to keep the diaper on (no surprise there) and got little splotches everywhere, but 2 weeks and a lot of bissel carpet cleaner, we got through it. Today she went in for her spay and did well (I think.) She was a little pathetic when walking out of the back room, she couldn't walk with the Elizabethan collar on, poor thing! She is also struggling with not being allowed to jump on the couch right now. Mostly she's… Continue

Izzie is in Heat... I need advice!

Well, before people scold me for not getting her spayed, let me explain. I moved in September and had an appointment set up for Thanksgiving week back in Pittsburgh where my parents are and I was going to take the week off, drive down with Izzie and get it done on Tuesday of that week. Well, a few days before, the Vet calls to say that the doctors decided to take that week off. Ok, well I guess I will need to get the operation done up in NY sometime in the next month or so. Fast forward through… Continue

Friends, Second Time Swimming and Moving!

My hair dresser has two lovely corgis and when I went to go get my hair done on Saturday I brought Izzie along to play with Dorothy and Henry. Dorothy and Izzie spent the afternoon running around the shop and outside chasing each other and generally having a good time. She and Henry also get along real well but Dorothy kind of like to be an attention hog so she takes up Izzie's time. ;-) Sine Lily isn't much of a player, it's good to get Izzie out and playing with other doggies. I wanted to… Continue

Oh my. Izzie is growing up so fast... :`-(

On Friday I took her to the vet and she was 12.8 lbs. What a big girl! She's 15 weeks and a few days. Also, her puppy fur is coming out and it's being replaced with the adult fur. Waaahh! And THEN, today I come home, and two of her bottom teeth are missing!! My BABY is growing up!!!!!

I remember when we brought her home and she could barely walk! Now we can hardly catch her. Her high pitched bark is being replaced with a much more mature voice. It's all happening so quickly! I can… Continue

Music?

Do your dogs have specific music preferences?

Whenever we picked up Izzie for the first time. I found that she was a lot quieter if we talked to her. Well, we couldn't talk all the time since it was a 2 hour drive back home, so we thought maybe music would calm her down. As soon as we put Enya on, she was quiet. If the music stopped, she started to whine again. Eventually, we had brought her up to the front and I held her to keep her company since she was so used to being with her… Continue

Izzie Eats Everything!

So now we can add to the list 1) Japanese Beatles 2) Drywall of things Izzie will eat! Ugh. She spent an entire evening last week throwing up bugs she ate during the day while outside. Sooooooo gross. Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister left Izzie alone for 5 minutes and she chewed a huge hole through the corner of the wall in the hall way... >_< My mum and I are trying to patch the hole in the coming days. Luckily the wall was just painted so it won't be too hard to match the… Continue

Izzie's First Swim

I spent a good amount of time outside today with the pups. My dad put up the pool last weekend but we didn't really get to go in until today. We never tried putting Lily in the water but my dad was kind of anxious to see how Izzie would do in the water. I wish I would have brought my camera out! It was sooooo cute! Lily is too old now to shock her with putting her in the water, but Izzie was a little shocked too! I lifted Izzie to give to my dad who was in the pool and he dunked her lower body… Continue

Chewing on Wood Corners and Other Bad Habits

Izzie seems to have developed a habit of chewing on the woodwork now. I give her so many options with toys to chew on, but it seems she gets bored of the toys and heads for the corners! Ahhhh! We sprayed the bitter apple on stuff but that doesn't seem to have stopped her. We don't know if the bitter apple spray is too old (almost a decade, from when we had Lily as a puppy) or it just doesn't bother her. Is there another way to stop her from chewing on the wood?? I guess we'll try and buy newer… Continue

Izzie Announcing

I've had Izzie for a little more than two weeks now. I've failed to really blog about my experiences since we've been so busy with taking care of her and then Lily got really sick with some diarrhea so I was running back and forth between home and vet appointments. Glad to say Lily is back to her easy going self and Izzie is well, a perky little ball of energy! Unfortunately for my mum, Izzie seems to only listen to me. When I take Izzie out to poop and piddle she listens and will do as told.… Continue

Waiting

I've got 3 more days until I meet my new baby! I can't wait! I'm a little under prepared for her though. The only thing I have right now is her slip collar. I went out and looked at the local pet shops over the weekend but I was pretty disappointed with the kennels and food bowls I was finding. Maybe I am just picky, but from experience with Lily, I kinda am particular about the things we already tried with her. I would like a set of bowls with a stand so that they don't get kicked around all… Continue
