Nutro puppy food
I am currently feeding my puppy Purina puppy chow. I wanted to switch to something alittle better. I was thinking Nutro Max puppy food. I was wondering thoughts on this food would anyone recommend it.

Greetings (or 'Grark!' as Gizmo would say) - I had excellent luck with Nutro in general, and all my dogs were on it for the first couple of years of their lives. It also came very highly recommended by people working at all petstores in my town. The only reason my dogs aren't on it right now is expense. I think it's only shortcoming is the limit of flavors - my dogs got tired of it, and the queensland, who tends to be underweight, only ate just enough to keep going. He filled out some on Beneful. Not that underweight should ever be a problem for a Corgi!!!

My Gryffin has been on Nutro his whole life. He got a puppy variety at first then transitioned to Chicken and Oatmeal for Sensitive Stomachs. I did try other foods early on due to the expense but he got sick on everything except Nutro. You probably know this, but take a week or two to transition your pup to anything new. Mix old and new, gradually lowering old and increasing new. If puppy is a gulper, as Gryffin was, invest in a feeding ball. You pour the kibble in a hole and he has to roll the ball around for the kibbles to come out. His belly handles it better as he is not filling with air and you will laugh hysterically watching him. The one I have is red and I bought it at his obediance class but I have seen them at the big chains. As for the Nutro, you can go to website to sign up for coupons. Good luck!!

While Nutro is one of the better mid-range brands out there, it's got a lot of fillers and grains in which your dog doesn't need and can't digest properly. It's far better than Purina, but you want to look for something that has meat/chicken/fish as the first ingredient, that isn't loaded up on corn and wheat, and has a high protein content. Remember, dogs are carnivores. They aren't meant to eat mostly grain. Too much in the way of carbohydrates, in fact, will help make your corgi fat. The best diet, of course, is raw. It also tends to be cheaper.

Shannon is right, i had snoopy on this but he didnt do very well on it. it is a lot better than purina but not to much of meat. it maid snoopy poop a lot since there is mostly grains

I would have to agree that it is certainly better than the Purina, but you could still do better. This month's Whole Dog Journal has some good food reviews, and you can also go to dogfoodanalysis.com to check out some free food reviews (although just because a food is rated highly doesn't mean the company is ethical or might not still have some problems). Good luck! I know finding the perfect food for your individual dog can be tough!

I often suggest that folks take a look at http://dogfoodproject.com. It's not the be all/end all of sites, but it does give you the chance to compare ingredients. My experience with Nutro is that in the past couple of years they've had issues with suppliers, out of stocks and were a major offender in the big recalls of 3-4 years ago.
We feed Natural Balance Lamb/Grain Free. The kids all have skin allergies and it's been the best for us.
As for what's out there, I look mainly at the first 4-5 ingredients. I want to avoid corn, wheat, soy and glutens. Take a moment to read the labels and look at the dog food site and you'll have plenty of info to make an informed decision for your pups.

I feed my 2 corgi males Canidae Lamb and Rice. It's a holistic dog food It's got some whole grain rice but nothing like meal by-products plus they like to include little treat bags on some of their 20lbs bags; which by the way the absolutely love!!!
You can find them on feed stores, they are about the same price as the Nutro but I find it easy on them and their coats are very healthy looking, not shed free but they are shinny.

We currently feed Nutro Max and like it fine, but I want to switch to a larger kibble food because my Corgis and swallowing the kibble whole and not chewing it. We tried the cookie sheet and spreading the food on the crate floor and continue to use "brake fast" bowls but they still scarf. Nutro Max kibble is about the size of a raspberry, so if you don't have the piggie problem I have, I highly recommend it!

There are other bowls you can try to slow feeding or you may want to try a Portion Pacer ball. Many different places sell them.

Most dogs don't chew kibble. As long as they're not gulping so fast that they're swallowing a lot of air, it sounds normal to me.
In my experience, dogs don't chew anything that's smaller than their own heads! I've had them swallow pieces half the size of my palm, whole. If I am worried that they're not chewing, I feed something that is a lot larger than their mouths, like a chicken thigh quarter or an entire chicken back; when I was feeding Great Danes I'd have to resort to deer shoulder blades and stuff like that because they'd crunch once and then swallow whatever enormous hunk of whatever I'd handed to them.

I feed my dogs Wellness Core. Miranda developed a rash while on Science Diet. I do not know a lot about Nutro, but I would just keep an eye open when you are switching them over for any sign that they might not be adjusting well. I still feel bad, Miranda was sick with the rash for over 2 months, and the vets could not figure out what originally caused it. Just something to watch for,
