Favorite Winter Weather Gear

With the winter season having hit South Dakota with full force, it was time to find the apropriate gear to face the elements with. Mt long Land's End coat I got for a present from my boyfriend last year: check! lined fleece gloves with the leather grips on the fingers: check! My favortie piece of winter weather attire, the 180º ear muffs: check!

And that's why I'm making this post. Those earmuffs are the best things around for cold weather, especially if it's coupled with blowing… Continue

It has been forever since my last update!

Sooo much has happened since I wrote at the beginning of the summer. I'm now over half way through my first semester of my second year of vet school. Riley is about 9 months old and just had major surgery. Unfortunately, he had to have a bilateral ulnar osteotomy. Basically, his growth plates in his ulnas closed before the ones in his radii. So they went in, cut both his ulnas in half, and drove a pin through the two pieces leaving a space in there to allow the bone to elongate. That was 3… Continue

Dog Booties

We've had our first snow of the season here in Minnesota and I am wondering about dog booties. With all the salt and sand that will be put on the roads that we walk on, I was wondering if people recommend these? I don't want our two corgis to be cleaning their feet and eat all the salt and sand that might have gotten stuck.

The first snow of '08

With South Dakota actually getting seasons that felt like, well, seasons, winter greeted us in a very abnormal fashion: BLIZZARD!. That's right, after ending last year's winter in quiet fashion, experiencing 3 months of spring weather and rain, having a summer that was sunny and not too hot (never even broke 100 degrees in Pierre), and having a healthy dose of mild autumn temperatures and colors, winter....sucks.

It was a low pressure system, combined with two different wind… Continue

I Guess We Are Going To Kansas City This Weekend.

Can any one tell me if there is any thing that a cute little corgi can do or go in Kansas City for this weekend? Dog parks, shops, places like that?

We are both really excited and can not wait to get him home and get him acclimated to his new home. So are there any tips for things to do with our new puppy for the ride home? Adopting our corgi boy this Sat. All input welcome!

We've been considering a second dog for a few months. Zeroed in on corgi breed, and a week ago made a step toward seeking out one. With the help of the local Rescue Agent we located our boy that's only 2.5h away from us.

We are very excited about the new addition to the family. We'll be picking him up this Saturday. Lots of homework has been done, but I am always soliciting valuable input.

About him…

Dog Vomit.

I was taking a nap yesterday afternoon and woke up to a bad smell. Faye just had diarrhea all over the floor next to my bed. I kept running to the bathroom to puke while cleaning it up. Anyway, I had her drink water then I left to go help a friend move. I came back after 3hrs and discovered the she has puked AND pooped in 7 different areas of the house, two of them being in my room and the bathroom floor is COVERED with this... gooey mixture. I brought her outside just in case then started… Continue

Working from home with a needy Corgi

I have one of those wonderfully flexible jobs where I work between an office 15 minutes away and my desk at home. When I'm away, Ofelia does great in her crate. She has toys and there and she usually naps. When I'm home, Ofelia gets bored very quickly. She doesn't understand that I'm not ignoring her because I want to but because I have a lot of work to do. So my back is to her most of the day. I try to give her time (and I'll admit I don't get outside with her as often as I can, except for the… Continue

Why I Don't Agree With The Dog Whisperer

This article pretty much sums it up for me in a nutshell.

I am very much against force training and it seems like it is becoming popular lately what with the popularity of Cesar and other shows showing similar techniques. People would rather use force, fear, or aversive techniques rather than understand how the dog behaves, thinks and communicates. Everyone wants a quick fix, not a technique that takes weeks of… Continue
