Before I Was A Dog Mom
by Carol Wat
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I made and ate hot meals unmolested.
I had unstained, unfurred clothes.
I had quiet conversations on the phone, even if the doorbell rang.…

Diggory is sleeping up against me as I type this... he's such a sweet little thing. I rescued him from the shelter on Saturday after Ginny and I had finished the Furry Scurry with the corgi team (our team raised over $1500 for the local shelter - woohoo!).
I've been thinking about getting a second the last few weeks and I knew I wanted a) a male corgi or corgi mix, b) a younger dog, but not…

They've spent the day playing together, and Ginny has toned down her grumbling protests about the baby brother encroaching upon her space. Still without a name, but it will come in time. We think he's definitely a "co-jack" (corgi/jack russell) and he is boingy. Real sweet natured, playful, and mostly housebroken too (but I'm crating anyhow, at least until I know he's more reliable. Here's a pic for everyone to enjoy!…

Ginny is in her little puppy bed that she's too big for because she is completely jealous that her BRAND NEW BABY BROTHER was taking a liking to it. That's right, Ginny is a big sister now. We found a little corgi mix at the local shelter. He is about 6 months old and was transfered from another shelter in Kansas. We're trying to think of names for him, and I know this is lame-o, but we have a "theme" of Harry Potter names, so if you have any good ideas... so…

Two years ago, in a farm in Northern Colorado, a little puppy-girl was born. I can't believe how time flies, but I wish Ginny a very happy second birthday!

Fall is in the air, so yesterday we took at trek down to an apple farm down in southern Colorado. We went to get ourselves plenty of fresh apples, pumpkins, berries, apple cider, etc. It's a pick-it-yourself-farm, and there were lots of little kids out gathering whatever apples they could. But there was also one very happy corgi! She got to ride on the tractor, which sitting in the lap of one of a little girl who was just doting on her. Then she got to hop around the orchard, jump over the…

Ginny and I are on a ROAD TRIP this week! This is the furthest she's been from home since I've had her. We got her all set up in the backseat in her big pet gear travel kennel. Day one, we drove from south Denver to Lincoln, about 8 hours. She did great! Slept most of the way and we just made a few extra pit stops for her to take potty breaks, get water, and stretch. There were only a few instances where she grumbled, I think because she was bored, so she got a couple of chewies to work on. We…

This morning as I was getting ready for church, I came into the family room and saw Ginny laying on the floor and twitching. I walked over to her and saw that she was just trembling all over. Still holding her head up and looking at me, but she was just sort of trembling all over. I picked her up and moved her over to her doggy bed to try to make her more comfortable and sat next to her just petting her and reassuring her. She just kept twitching for a while and then it got a little worse, and…

Last night, my sister's dog, Charlotte, got really sick. She started vomiting blood and having bloody stools and acting very lethargic and "out of it" during the night. She took her to the emergency vet and they assessed her and she was dehydrated and had some sort of gastroenteritis. They wanted to admit her, but it was going to cost $1200, and frankly, my sister doesn't have that kind of money. So they told her how to treat her at home and gave her medicine. She took her to my mom's house and…

It’s been pretty wicked cold out in Colorado the last few days, and from what I understand, it’s been pretty cold just about everywhere! Last night, in particular, I just couldn’t get warm. My feather comforter is at the cleaners, so I’m making do with a bunch of other blankets, but it just isn’t as warm and cozy. My feet were especially cold. So I had a *brilliant* idea to put Ginny to good use as a foot warmer! She already sleeps under the covers (very spoiled, I know), so I just scooted her…

Today is Ginny's first birthday and we are celebrating!
Ginny gets to go to daycare today and play with all her friends. Her "teachers" all wished her a happy birthday as she got there. She loves daycare so it will be a fun way for her to spend her special day. I brought a cake to the office for my coworkers that is so cute.... It has a big sunshine on it and says "Happy 1st Birthday Ginny". It's a good excuse to eat cake :)
Tonight I have a few little presents for her and then she'll…

Saw this pic and realized this is EXACTLY what my cats must be thinking.

Well, I've decided that Ginny is big enough to stay home by herself during the day, after having been able to spend every day at her Grandpa's house. So this week, we finally made the transition. I was really worried at first, but she's doing great. She stays in her kennel, but I put some things in there to try to keep her occupied. I freeze some kongs with water and a few little treats (her "pupsicles") and I use a treat stick to put her breakfast in, so it takes her a while to eat her…

Last night I was at a vestry meeting and since it was still nice out, I left Ginny and ol' Josie outside. I left the sliding door to the office open so they could go in there, but nowhere else in the house. When I got home, I went to go let them in and found a HUGE DEAD BLACK BIRD right in the middle of the office floor! It was so gross. Josie has little to no interest in chasing.... anything and this bird was much too big for one of the cats to bring down. So that leaves but one suspect - - -…

Ginny got fixed today. I felt so bad this morning as she was trotting off happily behind the vet tech like she was just there to make a new friend, not knowing what is was in store for her. I left her with the vet this morning, and though I felt confident that she would be ok, there was a part of me that still was worried and nervous and praying that everything would go ok. I called at about 3pm and they said she was ok and ready to be picked up. She was so groggy when I got her that I don't…

Ginny graduated from Basic Obedience 1 tonight. She is a wonderful student. It's amazing how attentive and perfect she is in class. (I wish she was as good at home!). Her teacher says she is ready to move on to Obedience 2 or even agility. She's a good girl. We've mastered sit, down, stay, roll over, settle and wait, and we're still working on leave it, shake, and heel. So, hats off to Ginny! Way to go, kiddo!…

This morning Ginny was attacked by a really mean stray cat! I was taking her out to do her "business" early this morning when it happened. I live on the second floor in a condo and outside my door is a hallway. My neighbors insist on keeping the doors to the hallway propped open with rocks. Anyways, we stepped out the door and I saw this big black cat in the door of the hallway. It hissed and looked mean so I told Ginny to "leave it" and we went the other way to avoid it. But this evil cat-jerk…

Mommy is losing it, seriously. Last night we went to the doggy boutique in town and she bought me a new collar. It is pink, with rhinestone letters that spell out my name, “GINNY” and a little princess crown in pink and white rhinestones. It is so girly and sparkly! What does she think I am, a little wussy poodle or some sort of teacup doggy? No way! I am a rough and tough corgi and I am NOT a wimpy little sparkle-wearing princess. Not much I can do about it though. Without opposable thumbs I’m…

Ginny is a very popular girl and has made lots of friends lately. Her new friends are some neighbor girls, probably around 9 or 10 years old named Kayla and Michaela. She met them at the park and now they hang out all the time. It’s really cute. The girls come over to the house to pickup their new “friend,” Miss Ginny, and they take her to the park. Luckily, I can watch them from my house as the park is just across the street. Ginny has learned to run up the steps at the playground and then she…

Ginny is one week away from graduating from her puppy kindergarten class… They grow up so fast. Before I know it she’ll be dating, moving out and going to college. Well, maybe not. But I am trying to enjoy these sometimes trying puppy days because I know she’ll never be this cute and little-- again.
Anyways, I had to talk to her trainer a bit last night because she has been Little Miss Jealousy with me and other dogs. If I pick up poor old Abbie, Ginny goes bonkers! She starts…
