The worst night ever...

I decided last week that it was time to get Scarlet spayed when another dog in the park took a "liking" to her. I recently moved to this area so I figured finding a vet might be a lengthy process. I don't want to take my little baby to just ANYONE you know, so I called every one of them in the phone book.

A MATCH!

The woman on the phone sounded sincere and friendly, so this was the vet for us. I set up the first appointment and my boyfriend and I headed there yesterday. I… Continue

We wrote a song: The Little Dog Blues.

Little Dog Blues

To the tune of, and plagiarized from, Jimmy Rogers’ “Texas Blues” (which may be from an earlier Blues song?) Helps if you can yodel, or howl and yodel simultaneously, and get your dog to howl on cue. Only the last 2 lines of the chorus are from the "Texas Blues" melody; make up your own. Note the 3 different choruses. That’s too awkward for sing-alongs, in which case the 2nd shown here is best. Doc Watson also recorded this.…

Corgi's are smarter than me :(

So the other day I went massive grocery/errand shopping with my husband. We got dog food, and some wipes that keep her from licking/biting her hot spot. Their soothing and taste bad. (At least I think that's what it is.) Oh and some scented hand sanitizer. So I'm using this hand sanitizer all the time and I notice that my fingers have a truly terrible taste. Like just awful.

So I'm all "I hate these sanitizers." Why did I buy them? Woe is me :(

Then I realized that I was… Continue

A big week for Stella: Graduating puppy kindergarten and getting spayed on Friday! Yikes! How do I keep her calm while she heals?

Little Stella just completed her last day of puppy kindergarten! She did really well! She already knew a lot of the commands to some extent before she started, but she's definitely a LOT more focused now. She's especially good with "stay" (which is REALLY important for crazy corgis!). She also does fun tricks now like spinning. :) The same trainer is offering an intermediate class, and I'm definitely going to take her. An agility class starts this… Continue

Does your dog go places they shouldn't?

This am Livvy decided to use my 1/2 wall as a balance beam. She has done things like this before. Does anyone else have a dog that climbs into or onto strange places? Occasionally one of my others make climb on the table but Livvy tries things like this quite often.

possessive/agressiveness

Hello all! I am really sorry but my husband and I have not logged in in a few months and I have some issues needing help. Daphne, our little black tri, is very possessive of me. I often joke about how I should have named her "shadow" because she constantly follows me. She will be 2 in November and she is very possessive of me when it comes to my husband and Apollo being around. If Apollo jumps on my lap she grumbles and tries to push him off. If he doesn't move, she then growls and starts… Continue

Rainy Day Activites?

It's been raining pretty much every day here for the last two weeks and supposed to continue until Friday. Poor Wrigley has been cooped up inside for most of that time. We don't have a backyard and the dog park is a swamp, so those options are out even for a short run. I've taken him on a few walks (and got stuck in a monsoon once), but going outside doesn't seem to be much of an option right now. Any suggestions for indoor activities to keep Wrigley happy? We play fetch a few times a day, but… Continue

She smells like a.... what?

I took Doris to a groomer for the first time today. Her toenails were hopelessly long; she was shedding; I haven't bathed her in almost two months. Really, the bathing part -- well, she isn't stinky. It's hard to justify wrestling Doris into a bathtub full of water and torturing her if she isn't noticeably dirty.

But I was feeling oodles of guilt about those toenails. Someone needed to trim them! I called the groomer in town, asked how much a good brushing, bathing, and trimming… Continue

Dog Park Vent

If you are unable to walk or train or exercise your herd dog... please don't get one. Please don't yell at your beautiful border collies who have been at your mercy since they were pups. They only want to do a job and because you have not given them one, today it is play with the red head's corgi. Do not ruin everyone else's time at the park by screaming at your dog constantly because it won't come to you. Perhaps this was the wrong dog for you. Next time get a small toy breed :(

If… Continue

First Day Home Alone

Oppy's just over 10 months now and we've been starting to trust him more and more being alone while we're gone. If we just had to run to the store, we've been testing leaving him out of his crate, and he's been very good. Over the weekend we went up to Hilliary's parents' cabin, and while there we went to the Bloomsburg fair. We decided to try to leave him out there while we were gone. We were gone about 9 hours and we came back to no accidents or anything destroyed! The only thing is that he… Continue

Venting, Venting... MORGAN.... Calming down...

Ok, so last time I typed, Morgan had dined on 3 of my shoes and my cell phone charger. We have since puppy proofed the room more, and crated him more too.

Well I take the dogs to work with me and I was taking a brake and reading my book. Mark comes by and I leave my book on the chair. Only to discover that he is also a book worm. He ate the corner of my FAVORITE book! The World of Pooh, it is a book made in the 1950's and I have read it time and time again. I love this book and I… Continue

Simon decided to lead the 'singing' at a pet blessing today!

I don't think I've ever posted what I do for a living here before, but I'm a church music director.

Anyhow, we had the Blessing of the Animals today in honor of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Simon hates my singing (voice is my PRIMARY instrument -- I've been a professional singer since I was 15), he howls whenever I sing, he cries when I play the piano, and he's afraid of my guitar.

So -- I'm outside with my guitar and I hand Simon over to be held by one of the teens… Continue

It's Pooka's First Birthday too!

I can't believe it, a corgi here in San Antonio, Ein has his first birthday today, and so does Gemima up in Rochester. I looked, they're not from Pooka's litter. My mom's dauchshund's birthday is also Oct 4th. There must be a conspiracy amongst dog breeders to either simply REPORT the birthday as the 4th, or to breed them all on the exact same day!…

Harley's Graduation

After 8 weeks of training, Harley graduated puppy class today. I wasn't able to go because I had to work, but my boyfriend Evan said that he just barely passed the class.

The only two requirements of graduating were doing 10 "puppy push ups", which are going from a sit to a down back up to a sit 10 times, and doing a 30 second "stay". Harley was previously very good at the puppy push ups, but Evan said that Harley practically refused to do them today. It took a while, but he finally… Continue

Livvy's ready for agility!

We met with the main instructor for agility today as they want to meet and see the dog, make sure they know the basic commands and that they're not dog aggressive. Livvy passed in about 5 minutes and the instructor commented on how people friendly she was! We watched about 5 other corgis run the coarse so that was fun. Livvy liked the100+ people but doesn't care for that many dogs but she managed. This is a dog that sat under my chair for the 1st… Continue

Fergie Had an Ultrasound Today!

We were pretty confident, but now its official. The stick turned pink! Our vet did an ultrasound today along with the blood test and there is no doubt that Fergie and Brodie are going to be parents! Our vets office is so wonderful. The entire staff had to come in to watch the ultrasound We could see at least three puppies, but there is a possibility of more. We could even see little hearts beating...which means we are a little further along than we thought! We expect her to deliver sometime… Continue
