Lots of Corgis turned out in their finest Trick or Treat costumes.
Gromit, Holly the Insane Wiener Dog, Debbie and I had a grand time at the

I told Gromit and Holly about the National Geographic special "And Man Created Dog." They were keen to see it, family history and all that, so I recorded it on the DVR and we all sat down to watch it together after dinner. I was able to catch some of their comments on parts of the show. Much to my surprise Gromit watched almost the whole show with Debbie and me but Holly bugged out before it was over. Here's some of their thoughts on the program:…

During the hot weather lots of folks will give their dog an ice cube to munch on. The dogs seem to enjoy crunching them and probably enjoy the cold on their mouths since dogs otherwise cannot sweat like we humans and worse, are trapped inside a permanent fur suit.
Poor Gromit, big hairy fellow that he is, is suffering through his first Arizona summer.…

Summer is upon us here in Arizona and summer temperatures, regardless of where you live, can be unmerciful to Corgis and humans alike.
The image above, of my old pal Watson, was made with a FLIR thermocamera, a fairly pricey heat measurement instrument belonging to my now former employer. Measurement of vehicle…

Great Aunt Missy (L) and Great Grand Nephew Gromit (R)
Gromit had a special visitor this past weekend and it was special for us too. One of the litter mate sisters of our two late Corgi buddies, Watson and Tinsel (1998-2009), is "Mistletoe" or "Missy." Missy is closing in on…

1948 Brockhouse Corgi Mk I
I ran across this on a motorcycle blog and thought I'd share it here. I've run across lots of Corgi themed stuff and of course Corgi brand toys have been around for decades but this scooter was a new one for me. Looks long and low just like our little friends.
Stylin'!…

My wife Debbie was cutting up some strawberries this morning to go with her breakfast. Gromit had finished his food and was watching her and since one of the berries was a bit mooshie she tossed it in Gromit's dish. He sniffed it a bit, and began licking it. Deb went back to her work, leaving Gromit unwatched...
Gromit, quietly and unseen, picked up the strawberry and carried it out into the living room onto the carpet and began…

Today was the day I took Gromit to the vet. The contract hit on his boy parts had come up due. He came through the surgery just fine but as you can tell from the photo above, he wasn't quite tuned into the world yet when we got him home. In due course he got to feeling a bit better as the meds wore off. The only thing that seems to have really bothered him was finding next to…

My parents were farm people for the first part of their lives, Mennonites (sort of like the Amish) for whom cleanliness really is next to godliness. They saw dogs as fine creatures, good and useful companions on the farm, but dogs were also animals like cows, chickens, and pigs --- and animals live
outside. Mom & Dad never quite approved or were comfortable when they'd come for a visit to our place and would have to deal with dogs in the house even…

Puppies grow and grow fast, no doubt about that. When we first met Gromit I couldn't help but notice his large paws, even at 12 weeks of age they were big so I suspected that he would either be a big guy or very much a "teddy bear" looking Corgi.
Back around the first of March a discussion with Gromit's breeder, Jean York, and other Corgi breeders at the Scottsdale dog show led to the decision that Gromit and his brother Night (who still lives with Jean) could stand to ease up on their…

Above is some video snippets of Gromit after a few days practice, 5 - 10 minutes twice a day in Gromit-Land. He seems to enjoy the obstacles but at 6 months of age his attention span is still pretty short. He was a bit put off by the teeter totter for a day or so but finally decided it was no big deal, especially if there was a treat to be had on the other side. He pretty much does the obstacles as expected (ragged but does them) but the…

Last week I rounded up a bit more lumber both new and old, more paint, a box of deck screws and set about building the remaining agility
obstacles for Gromit. We've decided to name the final result "Gromit-Land". When children come to visit they will be able to buy souvenir Gromit-teer hats with giant Corgi ears on them.
The dog walk and teeter totter were completed and like the A-frame are about 1/2 size from real…

Gromit, Holly the wiener dog, and Debbie and I made the long drive up to N. Phoenix today for the fund raiser picnic for Arizona Cactus Corgi Rescue. The count on the number of Corgwyn in attendance varies with some people, those probably more alert than me, counting over thirty Corgis including some Cardies.…

We don't give our dogs people food other than the occasional raw veggie, a small bit of hot dog during training, or perhaps something that got dropped on the floor and got snarfed up before we could blink. A special treat we do allow is to for the dogs to lick a newly emptied ice cream (or frozen yogurt) container. Debbie finished the last of some frozen yogurt tonight and gave Gromit his first taste of forbidden pleasure.…

Coalbyn's Patriot's Dream - AKA "Dreamer" AKA "Mom"
Our little family went off to the big dog show in Scottsdale today. We went mostly to see Gromit's breeder, Jean York (above) who had come from California for the show. We also wanted to show Jean and her husband Ed how Gromit is doing. Jean and Ed are wonderful people and utterly devoted to Corgis.…

Here's Gromit's first piece of backyard agility equipment, a new pause table. I built it out of some lumber salvaged from another project. A bit of sawing, some sanding, a couple of dozen deck screws, a bit of blue "parking lot zone paint" with some sand in it to make it non-skid and we're good to go. The REAL carpenters and woodworkers reading this are requested to please muffle…
