Always keep an eye on your doggy

I was just getting ready to leave for a meeting, but this news came up on the local TV station and I just had to blog before I get on the road. All I can say is, there are some very disturbed people in this world, don't leave your pets unattended, keep an eye out, be a good neighbor.

Finding a Dog Park

Ok, so after googling it a bit, I really haven't been able to find any dog parks in my area. I'm about 15 miles north of Philadelphia, PA. There's a bunch of parks actually in the city, but that's a bit of a hassle to go into the city for. I was hoping someone might know of a good place outside of Philadelphia, possibly even in western New Jersey where I might be able to take Optimus. Or, does anyone know a good site for locating dog parks? I tried zootoo.com but their site seemed buggy and… Continue

Peanut Butter Salmonella Risk Spreads to Dog Treats

Saw this coming through the feed this morning. Links to the article at the bottom of the post.

Synap:

Some of the salmonella-tainted peanut butter was used to flavor/fill certain treats. Petsmart voluntary recalls "Great Choice" Peanut butter flavored biscuits.

I'm not clear on whether this is preemptive or if dogs have become ill. There doesn't seem to be reported cases of dogs infected with salmonella, but I imagine that Petsmart does get their peanut butter… Continue

Corgi obsessed - youtube, hear say, tv, books & movies

I've finished reading The new complete pembroke welsh corgi, watched more than a few you tube videos, watched at least 100 hours of The Dog Whisperer and It's me or the Dog, and now I've moved on to movies.

Disney's Little Dog Lost is now on my list and I might have to start watching anime ("Cowboy Bebop") for Ein (a corgi)

I've gotten my godson a few childrens books corgiville fair and corgiville christmas.

Jan. 13th... can't wait.

Green Eye'd Dogs

I found a really neat article about dogs and envy. The basic premise is that if a dog sees another dog getting a better reward for the same command that they are doing, they will stop doing the command because they see that they are getting a raw deal.

Some of us already know that our Corgis are clever little furkids, but I never imagined that the reason she hates the cats might be because she thinks they get better… Continue

Can't do it if you are watching.....

Well today for the 1st time I caught Le-Le in the act of coming down the stairs. She has made us be her human elevator since day one. My husband thinks this is cute and says 'Don't teach her to go down, she might hurt herself. I'll pick her up and carry her down... just ask me". Well I am sure you can imagine who 9 out of 10 times takes her down the stairs. Granted most of the time she is following me up and so I have to bring her down. Well there have been a few exceptions when she has gone… Continue

Dog Theft On The Rise

A pretty scary article was posted on the Corgilove Live Journal Community.

Corgis are mentioned specifically.

"Toy breeds, puppies, and purebred dogs that look expensive or unusual are most vulnerable, says Peterson. Among the stolen breeds tracked by the AKC in 2008 are Yorkshire terriers, poodles, Pomeranians, shih tzu, bulldogs, corgis, a Norwich terrier and… Continue

The vest makes the difference!

So today we had a very fun time! Grandma and Grandpa moved back from Germany into their old house and mom brought me over to play with cousin Apex and go to the lake!

Grandma thought I was adorable and gave me a bag of handmade peanut butter doggy cookies from a special German pet store! mmmmmmm! She was a nice old lady and couldn't get enough of my tricks...

Then mom and grandma put Apex in her muzzle walker and me in my harness and we hopped into moms car to drive to the… Continue

Le-Le 7 months and counting.....

Le-Le has been part of our family for 7 months now and we are having a wonderful time. Each day brings her more out of her shell. She comes to life at dinner time, and right before bed. So funny that she wants to play with her toys then, runs between the bed and other rooms. She steals a sock, a dish towel, napkin out of the laundry basket and runs outside if the door is open, another room or under a sofa to have a quick chew. She notices the leaves falling & tries to catch them. She is so… Continue

Oooooo Some people get to me... train your dog.

Seriously.. I've heard this from many people on here but I've never personally have had a bad issue in a dog park yet...

And then this woman brings "Shakira" in tonight.

Roxi is great with big dogs.. her best friend here is a big white husky.. So when this black.. husky.. thing came in she got all excited.. until it got aggressive in which normally I let them handle the issue because since now.. usually the dogs have taken care of it with a few nips a growl or two and they… Continue

Embarassing!

Ok so, Didi and I were playing fetch on the driveway. I threw the ball and it went behind my car so that Didi had to go on the other side where I couldn't see her. Just as she went around the side, a motor cycle passed. She burst back into view barking and with her fur all sticking up.

I thought that the motorcycle sound bounced off the garage and sounded like it was coming from inside and startled her. I made her come to me and sit-stay while I went to go get the ball. As I was walking to… Continue

Indignity

Poor Didi had to have a flea bath today. She was very unhappy. She smells super clean though, and all the fleas that got on her when she was playing in the sand pit have fallen off, so it was worth it.
I've been sick the whole week so the puppy hasn't had any walks or park visits. She hasn't even gotten to go in the car while I made errands. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be feeling a lot better and we'll make it to the dog park.

Homemade Soapless Shampoo!

I remember seeing someone talk about soapless shampoo on here. I don't remember who. Most soapless shampoos are made of chemicals and aren't "real" soap. They have a lot of slip and don't leave residue, but they're also not very natural and can be kind of harsh on our furry ones.

Here's a recipe for soapless shampoo. It won't get soapsy or lathery, but it'll get your puppy as soft and clean as anything.

1 cup sulfonated castor oil

1 tbsp glycerin

1 tbsp mineral… Continue

Gas powered dog crate?

I have two cars, they both have a very high appetite and pallette for gasoline. Requiring both Premium and large amounts of it, you would think I had a large SUV, I dont. So the time came in this failing-economy/high-commodity country to think about parting ways with one in order to serve a better purpose. Both were terrably fun to drive at the very least. So I disposed of my least favorite of the two and went to pick out a small sub-compact with alot of room and good mpg.

So after a… Continue

The first months for Le-Le

Le-Le is our 2 year old cardigan corgi who we got at the very end of Feb just after her second birthday. After the passing of our beloved beagle, Buster in Jan, we wanted another dog but a puppy was too much for our traveling life. We had two beagles, Buster and Max for almost 14 years and loved the fun, playful qualities of the beagle, but I was interested in having a dog that would come when I called and not go on the 'hunt' at every smell. My grandparents had a Pembroke Corgi when I was… Continue

Clicker training and the Park

Didi and I have been trying out clicker training, (As per Sylvia & Timmy's advice) and it's been going very well. It's nice to be able to have her know exactly what she's being rewarded for. It can be find of difficult to get her to figure out if she's being rewarded for sitting,, looking at me, or just getting cookies because mommy likes her. Now she knows that clicker means "correct!" and she's a lot less confused. Before when she got confused she'd just start going through different… Continue

Pet Peeve!

I go through a lot of trouble to have a good puppy. I got her at a time when I knew I'd have several weeks free to be with her and train her, I am very diligent about being consistent and about her leash training. I want, and have, a good dog, through work.

I get REALLY annoyed when I am walking my puppy down the sidewalk (her on my right, walking just beside me) and someone with a dog (usually several) on a stretchy leash is coming on. They pull all their dogs to the side, pull them up,… Continue

Camping Trip

Actually this blog will probably be about more than just camping, since I haven't written in awhile. So if it's lengthy, I apologize!

Penny is doing great! Her ears are up, they've been up for about a week or two now.

Of my 3 cats, the one that she has the biggest, on-going conflict with is Guy. I think maybe Guy is just a big bully, and when I say big, I mean that literally since he is 20 lbs. And he's not fat, well not too fat, he could probably stand to lose a couple of… Continue
